Long-time Crows Fan,

Don't expect this to be anything like the Crows. I didn't expect this to be anything like the Crows, or else I would've given it one star. At the least, it's an interesting title if you're a long-time fan of the Crows and know all of the music.
I gave it three stars because I'm also a bluegrass fan, and this bluegrass isn't that great. They basically emulate each Crows song, without improvisation - an essential ingredient of great bluegrass. The CD comes out pretty stale, each song being exactly what one would expect it to be - and nothing more.

I am a huge Counting Crows fan and got this for Christmas. It is really just a good, fun listen. Each song captures the essence of the original and is decent bluegrass on its own.
Don't buy this looking for great bluegrass or completely fresh interpretations. These songs sound like bluegrass versions of the originals, nothing too inspired. But, a good listen nonetheless.

So the other reviews are right about the songs following closely to the original songs, and that's why I like it. Sometimes instrumental covers fail simply because you can no longer recognize the song. Is this CD going to blow your socks off? No. Don't buy this because you're looking for a spectacular display of bluegrass skill. Are you going to enjoy hearing some of your most beloved songs in a different style as you travel down the highway or are working on your computer? Most definitely.

I love Blue Grass and Counting Crows so I enjoyed this. Even though there are no words I can't help but sing along. It is a bit like elevator music, but still fun

The Counting Crows are my favorite band. I also own "Pickin' On Cold Play' and LOVE it. So when I found this via Pandora Radio, I had to buy it.
Its just so-so. I just don't think that many of the Counting Crow's songs lend themselves very well to bluegrass. Its nice to listen to in the background, but not something I can put my headphones on and waste away into a music dreamland with. If you can get it for $5 or so, go for it. Don't pay full price. |
