Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Eleanor Abigail Kane has just experienced an August as dreadful as the black parts on a banana: her beloved babysitter, Bibi, has moved away to Florida to care for her ill father, and Eleanor is bereft. How she grows to love a new babysitter, while still cherishing Bibi, forms the center of this understated early chapter book. The story is told in straightforward, steady verse that echoes the gradual pace of Eleanors healing process. Surrounded by adults who are sympathetic to her loss, Eleanor is allowed time to grieve while being gently encouraged to find joy in new experiences and friends. Cordells winsome cartoon drawings complement the text without overcrowding the verse. The phrase pickle juice on a cookie is used at first to describe something tragic, and then something ridiculous, and fortunately, this title falls into neither category. It tells a simple, poignant story that will resonate with any child who has ever had to say good-bye. Grades 2-4. --Kara Dean

Julie Sternberg's Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie is a profoundly bittersweet story about the relationship between a young girl, Eleanor, and her babysitter, Bibi.

Also the chapters are short so she could read an entire chapter on her own.

My name is Charlie, and I am 8 years old. "Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie" is a very good book. It made me think of my first babysitter, Ina, because we moved away from her. In the story, the babysitter moved away from them. Eleanor said, "My hand missed Bibi," and my hand misses Ina. It's a sad, but happy story. I recommend it to anybody!

Julie Sternberg's Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie is a profoundly bittersweet story about the relationship between a young girl, Eleanor, and her babysitter, Bibi. Bibi has to move away to care for her ailing father and the irresistibly likeable and thoughtful, Eleanor, has to deal with her deeply sorrowful feelings over the summer. The book, narrated by Eleanor, draws the reader in, such that we feel Eleanor's depth of emotion and her struggle to find her way in the world again without her beloved Bibi. Eleanor creeps into your heart and you find yourself caring deeply for her. And, yes, I even cried at the end of this very touching book, which I read with my 11-year old son who thought it was the perfect book for any young child, particularly someone who was struggling with any type of loss!

"Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie" is a great read for children beginning chapter books. The length of each chapter is manageable and the added pictures are a plus. Eleanor faces a major change when she must say goodbye to her beloved babysitter. She also experiences changes as she deals with receiving a new sitter and beginning third grade. Students are sure to connect with this wonderful tale of Eleanor and her difficult summer.
As a teacher, I am always looking for books that have a great message and are written well. "Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie" is that sort of book. Students can learn to welcome the changes in their lives as they experience the changes that Eleanor must face. I also love the wording and layout of the book. The correspondence between different characters shows great use of letter-writing. The use of similes throughout as Eleanor compares her situations to various items is also a plus. I can see a lot of teachable moments coming out of this book.

This book is not just good but it is great. It really feels like the characters have feeling it feels like a true story. The main character Eleanor is sad because her babysitter is moving away. She doesn't want to grow up she doesn't want a new babysitter. Eleanor wants everything to be the same and yet she kind of likes growing up. She has the melancholy a feeling but she slowly starts to enjoy her new babysitter and is getting excited about third grade. She learns to like differences. I think this book is perfect for Kindergarten-third grade, but even I loved it and I'm going into sixth grade!

The author came to my son's school to read the story to them. I forgot to give him money to buy a copy of the book at school. He was so disappointed because the story was so good. I purchased it and I have to agree. We both loved it.

I have a 7 year old who is advanced in reading. The trouble we have is finding chapter books that are age appropriate with subject matters she can relate to. This was a wonderful book for her. There are illustrations on most of the pages so it is a nice graduation from picture books to a chapter book. Also the chapters are short so she could read an entire chapter on her own.
The storyline starts off a bit sad but was a wonderful "life lesson". Sometimes things don't turn out the way we want them to in life but they turn out fine. The story is very true to life and shows that even though we don't get what we want, we can adapt and learn to be happy. My daughter LOVED this book and asked me to see if there are other books by this author (which sadly there aren't).
I highly recommend this book.
