4.0 out of 5 stars Really cute book!, May 2, 2000
By A Customer
Pickle for a Nickle is a really cute book. The speach therapist that my daughter went to used this book to help my daughter pronounce sounds she was having difficulty with. This book shows the true nature of a little boy and how curious he can be. It also shows how solutions can be worked out to our problems. My daughter and her sibbling really enjoy reading this book over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Laughs, November 7, 2007
This review is from: A Pickle for a Nickel (Hardcover)
I have loved this book since I was 6. At the time I thought it was the funniest book in creation. I still think it's a hoot.

There's this reclusive man who lives in a small house on a hill. (In retrospect, the man sounds like he probably has Asperger's Syndrome, the spectrum partner to autism). He cannot stand loud noises and he likes his routine, thank you very much.

His doorbell does not go DING DONG, DING DONG, DING DONG, but "ping."

His car does not go CHUGGA LUGGA CHUGGA LUGGA, CHUGGA LUGGA, but "purr."

His alarm clock does not go "RING A LINGA, RING A LINGA, RING A LINGA," but "ding."

He has this parrot that he keeps in a covered cage until he comes home from work. One day two kids, a brother and sister sneak in and teach the bird to talk. They teach him to sing, "Jack and Jill went up the hill to get a pickle for a nickel." The man has no idea who taught his nonverbal bird to talk, but when he finds out...laughs are abound.

To this day I laugh my head off at the sounds in this book, such as the soft sounds substituted for the loud ones and the funny spoof of "Jack and Jill." This is a classic that will bring smiles to all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars My childhood favorite, October 30, 2001

As a mother in her thirties, I can't wait to get a hold of a copy of this little story. I was read to often as a child and this was my all time favorite request. As soon as I learned to read, I read it over and over, the poor book was literally read to pieces. I hope it returns to print for a new generation of readers.
