Good information for the oblivious,
By We B Good (Boonsboro, Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pickles and Ice Cream: A Father's Guide to Pregnancy (Paperback)
The book provides simple, concise information about pregnancy, which every father-to-be should be aware of. There were even a few issues that my wife had not heard about before, but found them to be accurate when she questioned the doctor. However, for most of you very involved fathers-to-be, much of the information will come as no surprise, as you will, most likely, have already heard it from your wife's doctor. Nevertheless, the book is so informative that my wife decided to read it, also. My one disappointment was that the title of the book implies a toung-in-cheek approach, but, for the most part, the book is very dry. Easy reading. Most people should be able to read it in a few days.

If you're a new dad and worried about knowing all the stuff that's coming up pre baby... get this book... set it next to the bed, or the crapper and
read it bit by bit. It's infinitley less detailed than all the "mom to be" oriented books.. but it's just perfect for us dads who need to get the lay of the land first. I also recommend the "laugh and learn" videos for both of you... a tad dated in clothing, but the information is good.

Pickles and Ice Cream,
By Gayle "Gayle" (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pickles and Ice Cream: A Father's Guide to Pregnancy (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for your husband to read!! It is an easy reader for the men who have a busy life and would still like to know what is happening to your body and each step of the pregnancy. Each trimester is easily explained with definitions of the tests ad challenges you may face in the pregnancy. After coming home for a doctor's appointment that your husband may not be able to attend and you explain the different tests and reasons for them, Dr. B easily explains them in a language that is understandable to the husband. Excellent Book!!

Not the best but o.k.,

This review is from: Pickles and Ice Cream: A Father's Guide to Pregnancy (Paperback)
I found this book to be informative but I also found that the author tended to state his opinions as facts and at times he was a little insulting to men. If you just want a quick read to help understand what is going on with your wife and baby, it's a pretty good book. But, if you are looking for more, look elsewhere.

It's a very easy read, and contains all the info you need specially for first time parents.
It's also an excellent books for mommies to read. Especially for those like me who hate to read. Broken down by each trimester and gives all the info you need without the horror to scare ou.

Not a Bad Book,
This review is from: Pickles and Ice Cream: A Father's Guide to Pregnancy (Paperback)
This was a gift from my parents to my husband. While my husband is very supportive, he isn't much into reading a lot of different books. So, this gave the overview of things he needed to know about pregnancy itself while he was able to concentrate his efforts on more practical books for him (like The Birth Partner).
If you are someone who is planning a natural, unmedicated birth, this book could be somewhat of a turn-off at times because it is a little heavy into the medicalized birth. However, because the book focuses primarily on pregnancy itself, rather than childbirth, the portion of it dedicated to a medicalized approach is relatively brief. All in all, we found the book to be useful. It is definitely not a go-to guide, and it could have been organized a bit better, but other than that it was worth a read for my husband.

Pregnancy for dummies?,
This review is from: Pickles and Ice Cream: A Father's Guide to Pregnancy (Paperback)
My wife bought me this book. It really should be titled "Pregnancy for Dummies."
For an author with 20+ years of OBGYN experience, there is little narrative, few examples, and minimal commentary and recommendations by the author. Ninty-nine percent (99%) of the book simply just lists hundreds of "Terms To Know." Each of these "Terms To Know" is followed by a basic 3-4 sentence definition. The last sentence usually gives some basic advice or a personal anecdote. However, the advice the author provides is almost always only 1 sentence long. Recommendation: 1. This book does not provide new information that is not already found in every other pregnancy book. 2. The information provided is basic and although the author has 20+ years of OBGYN experience, provides absolutely minimal advice. It is simply a list of terms. 3. If your husband is reading any other pregnancy book or guide, you can skip this book; it is just too basic. 4. After reading the first few pages of this book, I felt insulted that I received this book from my wife. (I had been reading the "What to Expect When You Are Expecting," as well as other literature provided and recommended by our own doctor.
