Book Description

October 22, 1996
The first American pickup truck was introduced in 1896, as part of the similarly great industrial revolution: The King High Wheeler built by a Chicago machinist. As they developed, the first major manufacturer, Ford, brought forth the Model C Delivery Van in 1905. It was not a runaway success. They produced 10. The 1914 Dodge was another matter. Sales: 30,000.

Here are glorious vehicles, purchased for a song or traded for a shotgun; lovingly restored for thousands of dollars; and proudly entered in contests and shows.

"Old pickup trucks don't merely recall a simpler America or a better America. They ARE America. Pickups reflect this country's essence in its purest and most concentrated form. An old truck is a novel by Faulkner, a drawing by Rockwell, a building by Wright. It is Spencer Tracy in Bad Day at Black Rock, Henry Fonda in The Grapes of Wrath, Gary Cooper in High Noon.

These basic, rugged reliable vehicles have a remarkably widespread appeal. In researching this book we found old pickup trucks owned by farmers, lawyers, furniture makers, doctors, inn keepers, actors, plumbers and musicians. Some drive their trucks every day. Others have lovingly restored their pickups and drive them sparingly. But all the owners share the same singular experience: whenever they take their pickups out for a spin, people stop and tell them that this truck of theirs is the most beautiful thing they have ever laid eyes on." -- Harry Moses

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The ubiquitous pickup truck, an absolute necessity for a rural lifestyle, is paid full-color homage in this photographic album of classic pickups (built between 1913 and 1960) that have been restored to previous shine. Brief textual accompaniment tells about the truck and its owner and restoration, but the illustrations--dramatically shot to emphasize the personal character of each truck--will be the primary source of engagement for the vehicle aficionados who browse these pages. From Chevy and Dodge to Studebaker and Mack, these are gems captured in all their polish. Brad Hooper

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of trucks, August 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pickups: Classic American Trucks (Hardcover)
If you like pickups from the beginning up until the 1950's, this is for you. Excellent photography, highlights some models not usually done (Diamond T, Hudson, Reo). Good home-grown stories about each one (where it came from, what the owner is like, et al) makes this book one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Photography, September 12, 2000

This review is from: Pickups: Classic American Trucks (Hardcover)
This book shows classic pickup bodies, some with modern engines, very clearly. The photos are exceptionally vivid in color. The chosen trucks are highly interesting, and the settings for the photographs very well chosen.

I was not even aware it was possible to produce a book with level of clarity in the photographs. As a photographer myself, I was left wondering precisely how the photographs were done. i.e. Shutter speed, fstop, film type, filters, camera, lens and lighting. While the subject of the book, trucks, is not photography, the pictures, none the less, could serve as models of vehicle photography. Even a single paragraph on the topic would be appreciated by this reviewer. In a lucky world, perhaps the author or someone else familiar with the production techniques will further comment.

My three year old son loves trucks, and this book has been a nice vehicle to help us share some time together.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pickups: Classic American Trucks (Hardcover)
I gave this book as a gift. The recipient was crazy about it. He collects old trucks and farm equipment and had never seen a book like this. I tried getting a book on antique trucks at Barnes & Noble, but they had nothing on the subject. I had my pick of several coffee table type books on trucks with amazon.com.
