A rhyming rebus for emergent readers,
By
This review is from: Picky Nicky: A Picture Reader with 24 Flash Cards (All Aboard Reading) (Paperback)
Picky Nicky refuses peas, carrots, grapes and pears for dinner at home, preferring a plate of spaghetti. Why, her friend Freddy always has spaghetti for supper! In a familiar moment of frustration, Mom and Dad tell Nicky to go to Freddy's house for dinner if she wants spaghetti. In that fantasy land of storytelling, where improbable scenarios play without a shrug, Nicky carries herself from the table and down to Freddy's house, where she is welcomed without hesitation. There she finds her spaghetti dinner, but "We are also having peas, carrots, grapes and pears. Pass your plate!" Trapped in a moment of desperation at a table where "no" is not an option, Nicky comes up with a novel solution. Precious illustrations guide emergent readers through this rhyming rebus. A gentle reminder of the utility of cooperation and understanding, without whacking anyone over the head with it. My two girls, ages 6 and 5, give it ten stars.

This review is from: Picky Nicky (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (All Aboard Reading) (School & Library Binding)
Picky Nicky is a good book for 3-5 year olds. After you read the first page you just want to keep on reading. Since it is a picture reading you and/or your kids will learn their animals, fruits, vegetables and much much more! Picky Nicky is a book about a girl that won't eat the dinner her Mom and Dad have prepared for her. She only wants to eat spaghetti! There are 24 flash cards in the back of the book. The pictures act as a glossary.

This is a great story about a little girl who does not like her fruits and vegetables. She wants to eat at her friend's house rather than her own because he is probably having spaghetti. Once she realizes that her friend, too, is having peas and carrots and grapes and pears, she figures she's going to have to get past her thought of "Id rather eat bees and parrots than peas and carrots," and "I'd rather eat apes and bears that grape and pears."
In the end, she mixes everything in with her spaghetti and finishes it all, along with earning a treat of her favorite, ice cream! A cute book told with pictures in place of many of the nouns. Lots of bright illustrations, and flash cards that could be used with beginning readers. Definitely a fun book for toddlers because of the repetitive nature, and also a great book for beginning readers.

We love this book. My daughter really enjoys reading the pictures as we go through the story. And with a picky eater in the house Nicky helps us try new foods.
