5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious!, December 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Picnic (Audio CD)
Dorothy Collins is one of those many talented entertainers of the past 50 years whose names time has almost forgotten...until this Japanese re-issue. The TV variety show star highlights the songs of Steve Allen on this wonderful set. Backed by the orchestra of Jack Kane, Collins sweeps through the lovely title track then bounces through novelty numbers such as "Banana Split". Allen's signature tune "Impossible" receives a most infectious reading. Collins' love of the material and obvious love of performing makes this a joy to listen to again and again. Steve Allen may not have been one of our greatest composers, but through the immense talent of Collins his compositions are priceless. Those wincing at the price, fear not. This album is worth every cent. The 20-bit digital remastering is flawless and the attractive, LP replica packaging is exquisite. Its wonderful to see such a talented name receive such an alluring re-issue. Whether you are a veteran fan or the remotely curious, you'll be enjoying this PICNIC for many years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dorothy Collins, March 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Picnic (Audio CD)
Dorothy Collins was one of the most talented and versatile singers in American popular music. Unfortunately, most of her recordings have not been transferred to cd-format; vinyl versions are out-of-print and nearly impossible to find. She can sing virtually any style of music--vide. her ten years on the TV program "Your Hit Parade," where she performed most of the hits of the Fifties plus many other standards. "Picnic" is a good introduction to Collins; she does beautifully by the Steve Allen songs on the album. Even better is her Tony-nominated performance on the original cast album of "Follies"--she introduced "Losing My Mind," and it belongs solely to her. A great talent and an extremely warm and gracious lady with a wonderful sense of humor. She is deeply missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, July 12, 2003

Wow! What a terrific CD ! Dorothy Collins does such a wonderful job on Steve Allens songs. He should be so pleased. It is a shame Miss Collins has passed away, as she was such a terrific singer. Always one of my most favorites, I thought this CD would probably be a good one! Good is an understatement. I love her version of Picnic, which is a beatiful song anyway. I beleive Dorothy Collins could be ranked as one of the finest vocalist of all times. I saw her in Follies in the 70's and that was awesome.
I recommene this CD for anyone who enjoyes fine music. I wish more of her work was on CD's
