From Library Journal
A nearly complete new work replacing the author's Painting in Europe 800-1200 (Pelican, 1971), this volume augurs well for the Pelican series now directed by Yale University Press. Dodwell adds embroidery, stained glass, and mosaic to his earlier survey of manuscript painting and enlarges the coverage to include Irish, Anglo-Saxon, and English Romanesque work. Although the bibliography stops in the late 1980s, this is a strong survey of the period, with incomparably better plates than the original series. Highly recommended for all art collections; pay close attention to this revivified series.
