Book Description

October 1984
First published during the school’s bicentennial, A Pictorial History of the University of Georgia has now been revised and expanded to include a new, updated section and 43 new photographs that portray the university’s most recent growth and development.

More than 300 illustrations and photographs accompany the story of pivotal events and the details of student life from the first classes held on the Georgia frontier in 1801 through the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction, the admission of women in 1918, and the construction of a new east campus. This new edition features an in-depth chronicle of the University of Georgia’s rapid growth during the past decade and describes the effects of the expansion of the student body and faculty, the burgeoning athletic program and its new emphasis on women’s sports, and the administrations of Charles Knapp and Michael Adams. From landmark changes to little-known events and curious facts, A Pictorial History of the University of Georgia presents a complete portrait of the school that blends educational innovation and cultural diversity with long-standing traditions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Chock-full of anecdotes and observations that are sure to set sons and daughters of the red and black to reminiscing. . . . The nearly three hundred pictures culled from private and public collections and the lively text by UGA history professor Boney take the reader on an absorbing and happy flight into the past."--Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"F. N. Boney takes us through two centuries of colorful events and dramatic changes. . . . His intimate acquaintance with the place shines through these pages."--Savannah News

"Well-produced, well organized, and informative."--Journal of Southern History

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pictorial History of the University of Georgia, January 11, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book lived up to its name for the most part. Great photos with informative captions. It begins with the formation of the university, showing historical documents, and ends around 1999. I was there 1960--1962 during the first integration of blacks, and would like to have seen more photo coverage of that event, and some of the news coverage of it. It's a great book well worth the money for UGA historians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Execellent book, July 25, 2008
This book is full of HISTORY about UGA. It has more than you might expect. From old pictures and blueprints of the original grounds to current architecture. Lots of things you might not know about the origins of the school, how it survived the civil war, etc.
