From Publishers Weekly

Ashley Montague, rookie cop and forensic artist, gets caught up in an investigation involving a Miami serial killer and a bizarre Everglades cult in this second hardcover by prolific romance and crime novelist Graham (Hurricane Bay). Ashley passes by a traffic accident and learns later that the pedestrian victim is an old friend of hers. The police dismiss the case as just another junkie jumping into traffic, but Ashley isn't satisfied. She sketches the accident scene, puzzled by the details stuck in her photographic memory, such as a cloaked figure on the roadside. Meanwhile, detective Jake Dilessio is investigating the case of a female body found in the Everglades. Five years earlier, Jake put cult leader Peter Bordon, believed to have been behind Miami-area serial murders, in jail. But the new body bears the same marks of ritual murder as Bordon's victims. Is it a copycat crime? Or is the wrong man in prison? Or is Bordon's cult still up to no good? Jake has always believed that Bordon was involved in the road accident that killed his partner five years ago. Is her accident somehow related to that of Ashley's friend? Sparks fly between Ashley and Jake as they pursue their shared obsession with the criminal mastermind. The fast action is neatly punctuated by red herrings and false clues. Never mind the cliches (the obsessive cop determined to catch his partner's murderer; the religious cult that's really a front for illegal activities)-Graham's tight plotting, her keen sense of when to reveal and when to tease, and her eye for the Florida landscape will keep fans turning the pages.

From Booklist

The last killing had been five years ago, but now there's another body, also a woman. Her ears, like those of the other victims, have been slashed. Miami-Dade homicide detective Jake Dilessio is sure the killer is behind bars: after all, he put him there himself after his partner's murder. But things just aren't adding up, and Ashley Montague, rookie cop turned forensics artist, could very well be the next victim. The fact that Jake is falling for Ashley makes things even worse. A mysterious cult, bodies hidden in the Everglades, and a comatose patient who holds the key to it all are just a few elements that make this novel a real page-turner. Graham, who's written more than 90 books, has penned yet another spine-tingling romantic suspense that will appeal to fans of Catherine Coulter, Iris Johansen, and Linda Howard. Shelley Mosley

More About the Author

New York Times and USA Today best selling author, Heather Graham was born somewhere in Europe and kidnapped by gypsies when she was a small child. She went on to join the Romanian circus as a trapeze artist and lion tamer. When the circus came to South Florida, she stayed, discovering that she preferred to be a shark and gator trainer.

Not really.

Heather is the child of Scottish and Irish immigrants who met and married in Chicago, and moved to South Florida, where she has spent her life. (She has, at least, been to the Russian circus in Moscow, where she wished she was one of the incredibly talented and coordinated trapeze artists.) She majored in theater arts at the University of South Florida. After a stint of several years in dinner theater, back-up vocals, and bartending, she stayed home after the birth of her third child and began to write. Her first book was with Dell, and since then, she has written over one hundred and fifty novels and novellas including category, suspense, historical romance, vampire fiction, time travel, occult, horror, and Christmas family fare.

She is pleased to have been published in approximately twenty-five languages, and has had over seventy-five million books in print. She has been honored with awards from Walden Books, B. Dalton, Georgia Romance Writers, Affaire de Coeur, Romantic Times, the Lifetime Achievement Award from RWA and more. Heather has also become the proud recipient of the Silver Bullet from Thriller Writers. Heather has had books selected for the Doubleday Book Club and the Literary Guild, and has been quoted, interviewed, or featured in such publications as The Nation, Redbook, Mystery Book Club, People and USA Today and appeared on many newscasts including Today, Entertainment Tonight and local television.

Heather loves travel and anything that has to do with the water, and is a certified scuba diver. She also loves ballroom dancing. Each year she hosts the Vampire Ball and Dinner theater at the RT convention raising money for the Pediatric Aids Society and in 2006 she hosted the first Writers for New Orleans Workshop to benefit the stricken Gulf region. She is also the founder of "The Slush Pile Players", presenting something that's almost like entertainment for various conferences and benefits. Married since high school graduation and the mother of five, her greatest love in life remains her family, but she also believes her career has been an incredible gift, and she is grateful every day to be doing something that she loves so very much for a living.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding !!!!!!!!!!!!!!, May 13, 2004

This review is from: Picture Me Dead (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the BEST novels I have read in a long time. Heather Graham is one of my favorite authors. I loved this book.

Ashley Montague is a wonderful character. She wants to follow her father into police work. Although she is a talented artist, she has decided to pursue a career is law-enforcement.

When she and some friends take a short trip to the beach, they are delayed by an accident on the road. Later she learns the practically nude man who was hit by a car, is a former friend. The police decide that her friend is a druggie. Ashley, convinced he is not, decides to try to get someone on the force to dig deeper.

Ashley gets recognized for her ability to sketch faces. And she is offered the chance to move to forensics. Which she takes. This brings her into the murder investigation Jake is leading.

Detective Jake Dilessio has moved his houseboat to the pier where Ashley's uncle has his restaurant. Jake is still not over the death of his partner, five years ago.

When they first meet it is not love at first sight, or even like at first sight. But as they wind up caught up in the investigation of a murder, they find their investigations and emotions coming together.

This is a very well thought out plot. I was truly surprised at the twists and turns. The secondary characters and sub plots were entertaining. This is Heather Graham at her best.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious and run-of-the-mill, September 26, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Picture Me Dead (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was a definite disappointment. I nearly didn't finish it because it is very tedious and the actual story doesn't feature enough in comparison to the highly constructed "love affair". In this book, all the typical elements of an average crime story are put together - man and woman feel attracted and repelled by each other, argue a bit and land in bed, woman hears scary footsteps, rooms are searched, there are some wrong leads and a showdown. Yawn.
If those standard elements would at least have been mixed into a good story, then it would have been okay, but unfortunately even that didn't work. The wrong leads seem just as constructed as the love affair and the explanations/solutions for the wrong leads are in many cases just plainly unbelievable. There are too many characters and so in turn the characters are not well developed.
More room is given to the characters' private lives and thoughts and not enough attention is paid to the crimes, which are supposed to be the subject of the book. Those get solved in a by-the-way manner and the solution is delivered in a most uninspired and unsatisfying manner. Much more could have been made out of this story idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting read with twists and turns!, June 1, 2005
This review is from: Picture Me Dead (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoy Heather Graham's suspense novels. This book has great primary characters in Jake Dilessio, homicide detective, and Ashley Montague, police academy student, and some very, very suspicious acting secondary characters. The prologue is about what happened to Jake's partner 5 years ago but it keeps the suspense and mystery and we don't know any names!!

Ashley and her two friends, Jan and Karen, take off for Orlando for the weekend and on the way pass a very strange auto/pedestrian accident. The pedestrian is dressed in white briefs only. Ashley who is very observant due both to her rookie status and artistic abilities, notes a figure in black across the road. That weekend and when she gets back Ashley tries to find out more about the accident and discovers to her dismay that the pedestrian is Stuart, an old high school friend of hers. He is in a coma and not expected to recover. Ashley and Stuart's parents cannot believe he would take all the drugs found in his system.

Meanwhile, Jake is called to a scene at a canal where a young woman's badly decomposed body is found. Some of the MO is the same as a serial killer who killed some women 5 years ago but the serial killer is supposedly dead of suicide or if it is the charismatic former preacher "Papa Pierre", he has been in prison the last 5 years for some financial crimes. Jake is determined to find the killer from now and 5 years ago as he believes the same killer murdered his partner Nancy.

As Jake and Ashley meet, argue, fight and learn to work together and trust each other lust and romance explode.

The plots twists and turns and surprises are great!!

A hard-to-put-down read!!
