Book Description

October 15, 1991
Rear cover notes: "From the mid-1920s to the beginning of the postwar era in the 1940s, Deco-style metal-and-glass picture frames were a common item for sale in department stores, photography studios, and five-and-dimes across America. They are now a collectible, valued for their decorative detailing and their variety of styles and sizes. Picture Perfect presents hundreds of these products from a bygone era, tracing their history in the United States and providing information about the manufacturing techniques employed in their production. Organized according to style categories, the book features frames from the collection of Steve Starr, a Chicago antiques dealer and collector. His collection consists of over 600 Romantic, Geometric, Moderne, Streamlined, Patriotic, and Greetings frames from the period, from which he has assembled the most striking examples. Vivid and detailed photographs capture their uniqueness as objets d'art. Each frame illustrated holds a black-and-white or hand-colored photograph of a glamorous Hollywood film star at the height of his/her career during the period. Vintage photographs of well-known actors, including Clark Gable, Gloria Swanson, Rita Hayworth, Shirley Temple, and many others are presented."

This review is from: Picture Perfect: Deco Photo Frames 1926-1946 (Paperback)
Picture Perfect is a very informative book that gives the background on the beautiful Art Deco picture frames of the 30 and 40's.
The books's photographs of the frames and the dozens of great movie star studio stills that graced these picture frames are stunning. Any one that's a fan of the Art Deco / Jazz Age Period or a fan of classic film stars (I happen to be both) would be delighted with this book. Maybe, future editions could carry more information about the growing value of these frames.

Oh, God I just love this book. I look at it over and over. If you like art deco and if you like glamorous movie stars, you have to own it. Besides the appropriate photo in every frame, there are wonderful stories by the author, Steve Starr, to enjoy, with. A favorite purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accolades to the Author, July 8, 2011

In my opinion, when interior decorating, if the frames used are out of period, it can destroy the entire focus of the room. Home decor magazines of the 1920s and 1930s do not give detailed drawings or photographs illustrating frames in use. This book is a tremendous portfolio of early art deco frames and the history behind the designs including the history of their manufacture, their distribution and their use. I ditto the enthusiasm of the earlier two reviews.
