Editorial Reviews

Review

I have been a fan of Marcia Stein's quilts for a long time. We even put one of her quilts on the cover of Issue 100 of The Professional Quilter. It's the same quilt that graces the cover of her first book. Subtitled Applique Pictorial Quilts - From Photo to Fabric, this book starts with how to take better photos, how to choose the right photo for a quilt and then how to use your computer to look at the photos to determine value among other things. From here you'll learn how to transfer your photo to a master drawing that you'll use to select your fabric and create your quilt. Marcia covers three different methods of applique: turn-under, fused or raw-edge. In addition to a gallery of photos, you'll find three projects with detailed instructions to develop and build your skills. If you are looking to learn the technique behind creating realistic pictorial applique quilts, this is an excellent resource. (The Professional Quilter )

What photo memories do you want to commemorate in fabric? Are they pictures of your vacation, your family,or the natural beauty around you? Learn inspirational techniques for composing a great shot, creating a master pattern from your photo, selecting the right fabrics, making changes along the way, and designing a quilt that keeps your memory alive. Use your own artistic vision to turn a snapshot into a quilted wall hanging-no drawing skills required! --Quilters Newsletter

Nice book but . . . October 19, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have long admired Marcia Stein's quilts so I was excited when I read she was coming out with a book. Based on the first reviewer's 5 star rating, I purchased this book from Amazon. Sad to say, I have already returned it. There were some good concepts presented in the book such as staging photos, etc. There were also beautiful pictures of Marcia's amazing quilts. However, I thought the book was light on content and working examples.

If you are interested in this technique, check out Photo Inspired Art Quilts from Composition to Finished Product. This book comes with a CD which demonstrated the techniques presented in the book. I have taken classes on pictorial quilts from Ruth McDowell and Katie Pasquini Masuput but still learned much from Photo Inspired Art Quilts.

Picture This Review October 10, 2010
Format:Paperback
"Picture This!" by Marcia Stein is a new book. I have always been a landscape quilter, taking pictures and transferring them to fabric, but Stein teaches many new ideas that are new to me. I looked forward to this book being published and I was excited about it! This book lives up to my expectations and I just had to make a new quilt using her techniques and tips!

Stein guides her quilters from how to use a camera, the editing experience, drawing the pattern, adding the applique to the quilt and finally, how to finish the quilt. My sister enjoys photography and she was very excited to see the information on cameras and picture editing.

If your picture is not just right, Stein teaches how to remove or add, or even combine pictures. I do a small amount of photo editing, but as little as I know, I could understand her tips.

I heartily recommend this book to all difficulty levels of quilters! This is a fun method and in this book, almost anyone can produce a wonderful quilt full of your memories!

Great Book!!! October 3, 2010
Format:Paperback
I love this book! Not only does Marcia show you how to look for pictures that would make good quilts, she shows you how to make patterns from the pictures. There are also projects adn exercises to practice the methods in the book, as well as a gallery for inspiration. I can't wait to make my next quilt using photos I have in my stash.

I recommend this book to any quilter looking to use photos for their next creation!
