Book Description

September 1991
This book is designed to widen the reader's perception of the world through the basic principles of design. In our increasingly visual world, it is vital that we be able to distinguish and identify shapes in space. It begins with the story of Little Red Riding Hood, using triangles and rectangles and circles to tell the tale, and then guides the reader through a basic vocabulary of perception and composition, ending with simple exercises that will inspire the reader's creativity.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a playful book with a serious purpose. Most of us can describe how a painting makes us feel, but few can say why. Bang brilliantly illustrates how simple forms--diagonals, triangles, curves, horizontals--can be active, soothing, or downright scary. She shows how color alone can change the dynamics of those forms. No dry handbook on the principles of design, this work spins out Bang's ideas within the framework of the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. The book contains visual surprises on every page, beginning with a clever double cover. It might serve as a preliminary work to Nita Leland's The Creative Artist (North Light Bks., 1990). Picture This can help child or adult visualize the ordinary with the eye of an artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean writing and original concepts make it a winner!, June 16, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Picture This: Perception & Composition (Paperback)
I am a professional graphic designer and I learned many things from this book. I purchased a copy at the Cooper/Hewitt Design Mueseum store in New York City, then left it on the plane, after reading all but the last pages. Now, I have to buy a new copy! It is one of my all-time favorite design books, and I have many. Among other ideas, she has an original way of describing gravity's influence on our perceptions in a picture plane. That alone is worth the money and time for this wonderful book

5.0 out of 5 stars The Subtle Impact of Color and Shape, November 1, 2002
This review is from: Picture This: Perception & Composition (Paperback)
This book is a gem to be treasured by all elementary teachers for their Art library. Molly Bang demonstrates the use color and shape to inspire creativity and emotions in the minds of young students. I had the privlege of attending her demonstration lecture some years ago at a Children's Literature Conference. There I was delighted to discover the subtle simplicity of her ideas; I even put them into practice with my preschool class. This book will open a new world of enjoyment and enrichment activities--especially in the study of fairy tales--while introducing basic artistic principles. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Globalization works!, January 28, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Picture This: Perception & Composition (Paperback)
I was long interested in that book, and couldn't get it into my hands. Well, having discovered it at Amazon USA there was no other thing to do but buy it and hope it would really arrive here in Germany. Thanks to globalization and FedEx I am now able to discover how the old Bros Grimm fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood turns into a fascinating study of how pictures work emotionally - wow! And, it really was deliverd by mail, not by a little girl with a basket :-)
