4.0 out of 5 stars Sports preview from Huey Lewis and News. February 9, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Huey Lewis and the News' sophomore album, the self-produced Picture This (1982) was a warmup for the colossal explosion that would become Sports. While not as polished as Sports, Picture This does feature HL&N's trademark 80's rock fused with soul and doowop stylings, not to mention their appealing falsetto harmony vocals and some downright fiery guitar from lead guitarist Chris Hayes, and snappy percussion from drummer Bill Gibson. But the synergistic teamwork ensured that Huey Lewis didn't steal the spotlight just because he was lead singer. In examining the people consisting the groups, I note how they play an instrument and do vocals.

The album itself yielded three singles, two of which the Top 40. The first was the Mutt Lange-penned smooth pop song "Do You Believe In Love," a #7 hit which contains the aforementioned hallmarks of their sound, where the title chorus features harmonies from the group. The #36 "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do," had a more leisure doowop/jazz sound, with some stylings that would later be used in "If This Is It" in Sports. Finally, the snappy and upbeat "Working For A Livin'", which has some cool organ and which I remembered being played over the speakers at the 1992 Democratic Convention, missed the Top 40 by one spot. "I'm taking what they're givin cuz I'm working for a livin'" goes the chorus, as Lewis and buddies sing of the hardships of trying to make ends meet, such as a check that's already spent for expenses such as a $100 condo and $200 rent. It seems a bit unfair that a song aimed at those of us hard workers didn't do as well, and yet the equally upbeat "Hip To Be Square" made it to #3 years later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard Workin' Band July 10, 2000
Format:Audio CD
Picture This was Huey Lewis & The News' breakout album. It contains one of the ten best songs of the 80's in "Do You Believe In Love". Try listening to the song without singing along. The rest of the album is a collection of catchy, hummable tunes including "Giving It All Up For Love", "The Only One" & "Buzz Buzz Buzz". The rolicking "Workin' For A Livin'" defines the band's attitude. There are no messages here, just fun, good-time music, that's easy on the ears. Great to throw on at a party. Sit back, crack a beer and enjoy the ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tell Me A Little Lie. There isn't one. October 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I bought a copy of this CD at Best Buy awhile back. I wanted it for Do You Believe In Love. But, I shuffled my music one day and "Tell Me A Little Lie" played and I really liked it. There are other songs that are good on the disc. But, to me, those 2 stand out the most.

Huey's music is always a great listen - great vocals; upbeat and fun; original and creative. & he's pretty damn good on covers, too!

Great addition to my collection of H.L. & the NEWS. And after all these years they still sound just pretty fine in concert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where It All Began To Happen February 25, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Won't say their debut Huey Lewis And The News didn't have it's good moments. But the Huey Lewis & The News sound that...honestly is one of those few things about the 1980's you hear very little negativity about really emerged here. Much as with Hall & Oates this marked the bands effort and self production. And the fact that many of them had been in it for such a long time and knew their way around what to do and not to do in music made them good candidates for that. Another thing that made this for them is that they didn't have any reservations about letting their soulfulness just take right off here, not always trying to rock as hard as they had the first time out. Sure in the post disco world that might've been the safest way to go. But Bruce Springsteen didn't go that route. So why should Huey?Or for that matter anybody?

"Change Of Heart","Tell A Little Lie","Is It Me" and "What Ever Happened To True Love" are the main rockers here but again are better crafted and produced than the ones on the debut. "Giving It All Up For Love" and "Do You Believe In Love",however are where the bands sound came right together. Combining old school R&B/doo-wop harmonies with contemporary funky dance-pop music these songs really provided them with a good couple commercial successes. With it's rocking soul style, again a big part of their future sound "Workin' For A Livin" take the 'more you make, more they take' plight of working class America with a lot of wit and humor and not much whining. "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do" is another strong tune,a slower jazzy/doo-wop type number showcasing their great vocal harmonies.
