Pie contests—the hot new trend in party games!

Pie Contest in a Box is for farmers' market foodies, retro cocktail party lovers, competitive-cooking-show fans, block partiers, and just about everyone else who shares a hankering for good times and good pie. In the blue-ribbon tradition of county fairs, community cook-offs, and competitive cooking shows such as Iron Chef America, Top Chef, and Throwdown with Bobby Flay, Pie Contest in a Box represents a fun and inexpensive way to entertain. The kit features:

* A Pie Contest Handbook, which orients judges to the history of pie, discusses why pie matters, outlines different categories of pie and official judging criteria, and includes prize-winning recipes

* Pie Contest Judge Badges

* Numbered Pie Toppers on Toothpicks

* Pie Contest Scorecards

* Pie Contest Prize Ribbons

Pie Contest in a Box will have guests clamoring for a slice of blueberry or strawberry rhubarb, along with their scorecard and fork.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gina Hyams has put together a fabulous fun book/gift: Pie Contest in a Box: Everything You Need to Host a Pie Contest. There's a great book inside, with recipes, pie history, and plenty of inspiration for gathering your friends together to see who can make the best pie. Plus, ribbons! And scorecards! This would be a great party." --Gluten-Free Girl Shauna James Ahern

"a perfect little gift" --Jackie Burrell, San Jose Mercury News

"Pie contest glory! Best advice ever..." --Amy Rogers, WFAEats

"...perfect summer cottage activity. Only thing missing is the pie." --John Tanasychuk, Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel

"Now it's your turn to put your pie where your mouth is with this clever pie book." --Diane Cowen and Greg Morago, Houston Chronicle

"I admit, I raised my eyebrows when I unpacked a new gift item called Pie Contest In A Box...Second reaction: Oh, so what. This could be fun. I think I'll actually use the contents of the box -- score sheets, pie toppers, and ribbons -- to liven up a contest this summer for my pie-baking kids, or maybe bring it along for a summer vacation with friends. But the handbook in the box is the part that seems the most useful..." --Rebekah Denn, Al Dente

"...could be incredibly useful wherever food markets, block parties, and 4-H fairs thrive." --Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delicious! June 30, 2011
Format:Paperback
It's as easy as pie! Loved it. Has every ingredient necessary for hosting and judging a successful pie-baking contest! Gina's book/kit was a life-saver. I am in charge of a pie/cake baking contest happening this weekend. I was struggling with how to make it work. Voila -- "Pie Contest in a Box" saved the day. Simply delicious. A must have. In fact, my book club is talking about having a "pie contest" next month and wants to feature Gina's book/kit! On a fun note -- we did have a "Cow Pie" (pies that aren't a pie) entry in this weekend's pie-baking contest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loads of fun in a box! June 29, 2011
Format:Paperback
just got Pie Contest In a Box this week and I must say this is going to be my go-to gift for parties and as a hostess gift.

This little gem is adorable and of good quality. It's chock full of wonderful prize-winning recipes (which means someone has already done all the work to perfect it!), fun quotes about pie, score cards, prize ribbons, and more. I'm going to use it at my family's 4th of July picnic and again at our annual family reunion. I go to so many potluck type of events and this is the perfect thing for those occasions. In fact, I can see this becoming a new tradition!

I love pie and I'll take any excuse to turn eating it into more of an event or a celebration.

PS

There is even a recipe for vegan pie - so everyone should find something they can bake for anyone in their circle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun and Charming Gift Box with Substance! June 29, 2011
Format:Paperback
There's nothing more fun, delicious, and soothing than pie. I'm a sucker for peach pie. And apple pie, berry pie, cherry pie, peanut butter pie... okayfine, I'm just a sucker for pie. And when it comes to Cake Vs. Pie, well, there's no contest!

Well, it may be no contest Cake vs. Pie, but what about Pie vs. Pie? How about a Pie-off! A PIE CONTEST! Oh, fun! And that's what Pie Contest in a Box is for.

I'm really enjoying Pie Contest in a Box. It comes with a handbook with yummy, easy-to-follow recipes, and pie history, and even a list of fun themes (like "Family Heirloom," "Hard-Core Locavore," and "Aphrodisiacs"), and it comes with cool STUFF: contest scorecards, pie ID tags, award ribbons, judges badges. With this kit, you have everything to throw a pie contest. And I totally plan to.

This would make a great gift for anybody who likes pie. And everybody likes pie, right? It's genetic. As the author says: "First our ancestors hunted and gathered, and then they created pie."

This Pie Contest in a Box is great. The Box arrived a little bend because it was sent in an envelope rather than a box itself.
