Grade 5 Up-Mosaics often outlast other art forms of ancient cultures because they're made of glass, stone, and ceramics. This book, which combines archaeology and art history and includes a description of how craftspeople put the pieces together, starts with pre-Christian mosaics and examines examples from the Greeks, the Romans, and the Byzantines, along with other ancient and modern cultures. Inexplicably, a page on Aztec works appears stuck in the chapter on Byzantine art. The black-and-white and full-color photos only sometimes capture the magnificence of the effects of thousands of tiny tiles. There's not much available on the history of mosaics for a juvenile audience, but there's probably not much demand either. Supplemental material to studies of ancient Western cultures.
