Book Description

August 22, 1991 Da Capo Paperback
In 1972, Stonehill Books published David Dalton's Janis, a multimedia extravaganza that incorporated interviews, quotes, photographs, lyrics, Rolling Stone Clippings, sheet music, a record of rapping and singing, and prose as wild and moving as Janis's performances. Piece of My Heart is a reconstruction and revision of that early work - one of the first "rock 'n' roll" books—leaving the prose and interviews intact, adding dozens of new photos, and incorporating a wealth of new material. Here is the best possible portrait of the lonely teenager from Port Arthur, Texas, who took the blues farther than anyone before or since, offering revealing glimpses of her on the road—backstage with Jerry Lee Lewis, kidnapped in Kansas, partying with the Grateful Dead, the Band, Bonnie and Delaney, and with her own band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. But Piece of My Heart goes beyond Janis's own story to provide us with a portrait of the Kosmic Blues themselves—the self destruction that lies at the heart of the rock' n' roll myth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful Mama July 29, 2000
Format:Paperback
This book gives a glimpse into the fascinating life of Pearl herself. You can see the troubles that led her to drink, and led her to sing with her soul. I loved this book and would say to any Joplin fan, it's totally worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Thing February 17, 2012
By Chippy
Format:Paperback
This book is basically a running dialogue with Janis Joplin, as recorded by a young journalist, David Dalton. He went on the road with Janis, and (thank GOD!) brought a tape-recorder with him. Of all the Joplin biographies, this one gives the reader the best glimpse into the actualy day-to-day life of Janis, and let's us get a sense of what she was actually like as a person.

A big high point of this book is that Dalton went along on the Festival Express...the week long excursion thru Canada...so there are lots of juicy tidbits about various celebrities, including the Grateful Dead.

During a recent hurricane that hit the city I live in, I lost all power (and water, since I live in the country, and have a 500 foot well)...and I re-read this by candlelight. It is just one of those books that you can read over and over and it never loses its flavor.

By the way, where the heck IS David Dalton now? I've done dozens of Google searches, and cannot find him. If anyone knows where he is (or even if he is still alive) please post it here....thank you!
