Exceptional Talents,

This review is from: A Piece Of Your Soul (Audio CD)
Just knowing this band will never produce another album gives me the -- BLUES!!! I have been a blues lover/collector of many artists and blues styles since the 50's, and by accident had downloaded and listened to "A Good Day for the Blues"... "who's that?" And played it again... it just knocked my socks off... and now was driven to learn the singer's name. Only to find out its some guy with the name Malford Milligan, while playing the song again, and again, and asking myself "who's Malford Milligan?" So, I continue searching only to learn this band no longer existed, and left in its wake the three albums, as their legacy, "Dog Years", "Bluest Eyes", and "A Piece of Your Soul." I have spend the last four months listening to and now finally acquiring ALL their albums, and wondering "WHY" this band didn't go platinum across the board and far into the future? Their sound is deeply rooted in the blues, and as Albert King said "The Blues Don't Change!" This group was VERY special and whoever fronted as their agents/promoters failed not only the artists, but sadly modern blues lovers the world over. And I am still left wondering "who's Malford Milligan?" The combo of David Grissom's creative writing/guitar talents with Malford's vocals is exceptional and should never have been severed. So, I am left wondering and searching to find where they (Malford and David) are today, so "IF" anybody knows what groups they are with I would appreciate an e-mail alert, it would be much appreciated.

Just Gotta Have It!,
By Camille Radloff (Camp Dobol, Bosnia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Piece Of Your Soul (Audio CD)
I've been blessed to see these guys play together live many times and have to say that the waiting period for this album to be released darned near drove me crazy with anticipation! Now that the band is no longer together )=, "A Piece of Your Soul" (along with its predecessor, "Bluest Eyes", and its follow up, "Dog Years") stays in constant rotation through my various CD players. I even bought an extra one for backup in case something happens to my original copy! "Solid Ground", "Bitter Rain", and "A Piece of Your Soul" are a few of the harder edged tracks that'll get your blood pumpin', while "Cynical" and "Share that Smile" will give you a chance to take a breather from whatever's got your blood pressure up. "Good Day for the Blues" rolls the two styles together to create what has truly become an anthem for those of us in the know. Two things sadly missing are David Grissom's extended intro on "Good Day for the Blues" and the mid-tune dueling guitar jams that Grissom and David Lee Holt played during live performances which took the whole house to a higher level; but if you have a passion for soul-touchin', happy-feet makin', booty-shakin', rockin' Texas blues... without this album (CD), your collection is incomplete!

Storyville is a guitar band with some great guitar riffs and excellent vocals. This band has a slight R&B feel but also reminds me some of Bad Company. They feature Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. And I think had the expectations not been so great for this band, they might have lasted a little longer. However, because many thought they would be a supergroup, the pressure to sell tons of records was maybe a bit much. It is too bad because this is a very good band. They sound the best on the ballads as their harmonies are just superb. David Grissom who wrote most of the songs on A Piece of Your Soul, is at his best on the ballads. My absolute favorite is "Share that Smile",if Top 40 radio was still around, this would have been a big hit. Stand out songs on A Piece of Your Soul are "Good Day for the Blues" (tr#2), "Don't Make me Cry" (tr#4) and "Share That Smile" (tr#11).

I have now bought all 3 of their CD's and love them all. The songwriting is first class and most of the tunes are easily distinguished as STORYVILLE songs. This may be mostly due to the brilliant vocals of MALFORD MILLIGAN, but the whole band has a highly original take on rocking blues. With SRV's rythm section, the backing is first class as is the rest of the band. Inventive solos, complex but moving rythm patterns, good to great lyrics all combine for a great listening experience.

No collection of blues/rock is complete without "A Piece of Your Soul". There very simply is not a weak track on the entire disc. From the raunchy ("Bitter Rain") to the uplifting ("Good Day For The Blues") to the bittersweet ("Cynical") to the soft ("Share That Smile") Storyville encompasses the entire range of musical expression with a style that is as provocative as it is unique. Put this disc on your list of music to have on a deserted island.

Malford will break your heart...,

A friend turned me on to these guys about three years ago, and I haven't been able to stop listening since. I've been a blues/southern rock fan all of my life, but the first time I heard Malford Milligan's soulful "Don't Make Me Cry" I cried like a baby. To this day, I've yet to find a vocalist who moves me the way this man does. Mercy! The rock solid foundation of Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton (Double Trouble) and the songwriting and guitar stylings of David Grissom round out this completely delicious band. Every song is a monument to Austin-style blues and funk. My faves from this disc: "Good Day For the Blues," "Don't Make Me Cry," What Passes for Love (Stevie would smile)," "When the Luck Runs Out," and "Can't Go There Anymore." I consider it a tragedy that this band didn't make it. Makes me want to sing the blues for sure. A "must-have!"

A piece of their soul,

This album definitely ranks in my top 10 and is something I listen to all the time. All tracks are strong and the musicianship and songwriting is top rate. I'm always looking for something new that's actually good and stands up to the rest of my old favorties. Highly recommended!

Didn't know they existed,
This review is from: A Piece Of Your Soul (Audio CD)
I didn't even know this band existed until a guitar player friend of mine gave it to me. I absolutely love this CD. The music is great and the beat is awesome. I can't help but get into the music. I find myself driving down the road just belting out tunes along with the CD. Not a pretty site, but FUN!

Long Live Storyville,

This review is from: A Piece Of Your Soul (Audio CD)
I was lucky enough to see this band a number of times between Austin and Bryan/College Station, Tx. This album is the pinnacle of their brief but legendary run. They were phenomenal on stage, and none of their CD's, especially "A Piece of Your Soul," is far from my player. "Piece" is definitely one of my all-time favorites.
