By Steve Ramm TOP 100 REVIEWER on March 20, 2011
Format: Audio CD
I discovered this talented mandolin player - Jimmy Gaudreau - when I heard the track "El Doggo" on a DJ radio sampler. I was pretty sure I recognized the lead electric guitar of Frank Vignola, a musician whose music I truly love and whose lightning-fast fingers always amaze me. Upon receiving - and listening a few times - to the full album (18 mostly-short tracks), I was really impressed. The guy - unfamiliar to be, but with a list of credits playing with everyone from Bela Fleck to Robin and Linda Williams, and now Frank Vignola - can play.

The title of the album is based on the fact that Gaudreau mixes fully fleshed out songs ("pieces") with shorter experimental ones ("bits") lasting a little more than a minute. The variety is wide going from the aforementioned gypsy jazz style of "El Doggo" to the lilting melody of "Florentine Waltz".

Everything here is instrumental except the last (marked as "bonus") track. It's a song written and performed by Lauren Mears, a singer songwriter from Wyoming. Personally - though the track is well produced - I'd rather have had an all-instrumental album.

A comment on the liner note insert: This is another case where the information - individual track comments by Gaudreau are crammed into tiny print and a non-distinct background color is used. You may very well need a magnifying glass (I did) to attempt to read these. While I realize that Gaudreau wanted to thank his friends, he uses a font twice the size of the notes - and on a highly contrasted background - to do this. This is not the first time I've observed this on albums but it's a trend that really detracts from the owner's pleasure.

At least now I know who Gaudreau is and I'll certainly look for his recordings in the future.
