Book Description

Arabesque September 1, 2009
Tragedy brought Maxine Sherman and Quinten Parker together years ago, but another woman stole him away from her. For as long as Maxine could remember, her nights were filled with dreams of his return. That was then. Now Quinn is back after another tragedy occurs in his life, and he wants things the way they were. But Maxine has a new life, a new man…and a secret that binds her and Quinn forever.

Common sense tells Maxine she shouldn't put her heart in the hands of the man who once left it broken in pieces—and risk losing the love and devotion of Taylor Collins, who not only brings her joy, but the kind of love she always longed for. Is Taylor her real love or a substitute for what she lost? As Maxine struggles against Quinn's passionate pleas, and the old desires ignite between them, she must decide if what they have is strong enough to last this time, or if her feelings are only…pieces of dreams.

More About the Author

My official writing career began in 1987 when my first short story was published. My first novel, Rooms of the Heart was published in 1990. Since then there have been a slew of books and short stories that I've had published, from romance to women's fiction, chic-lit, erotica and mysteries. I enjoy them all. Three of my novels were adapted for television so that was exciting. I've had the honor of conceptualizing and editing several collections: After the Vows, Midnight Clear, Where There's a Will, Indecent Exposure, and The Hot Spot. I currently write full time and live in Brooklyn, NY with my family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and Profound.., August 10, 1999
By A Customer
In the letter at the back of PIECES OF DREAMS, Ms. Hill observes that the style of the book is "a bit different from the typical romance." PIECES OF DREAMS is indeed different. From the first person narrative, to the almost microscopic look into the souls of the three major characters, PIECES OF DREAMS is indeed different-and special. Not only does Ms. Hill take us into the mind of the hero and heroine, Maxine and Taylor, but into that of Quinten Parker, the father of Maxine's son.

PIECES OF DREAMS is about love. But it is also about forgiveness, understanding, and selflessness. Each of the three characters demonstrates these characteristics. At the end of the book, I felt strange inside, knowing that I'd been touched spiritually by their story. I'd seen into the deepest, most hidden thoughts of three individuals who'd come to a turning point in their lives, who'd suffered and were still suffering, and who were so scared about the events in their live, that they were hurting.

MAXINE: A strong, but scared individual, who was in love with one man, but the memory of the other was so vivid that she needed to confront the past before she could put it to rest and find happiness with her man.

TAYLOR, a noble hero, who loved unconditionally, and who was hurting so much with loving that he couldn't bear to lose the woman and son who were his life. A man Ms. Hill believes "epitomizes the depth and compassion of so many black men."

QUINN, the wounded one, who'd loved, and now had to face the immediate future alone; a man who was noble and selfless enough to give up his son. What was special about this book was the level of maturity of the three characters. At the end, I'd grown to care for these three individuals, admiring the mature, sensible choices they had made. When I finally and reluctantly closed PIECES OF DREAMS, I felt a conflict of emotions. Sad, that the story had come to an end; contented, because the characters had made all the right choices; moved, because of the beauty, and intensity of the story. I felt privileged to have read this wonderful, wonderful book; a book that had touched me in a strange profound way.

Ms. Hill, I thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Follow-up To A Private Affair!, May 7, 1999
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I loved the way Max, Taylor and Quinn all got the opportunity to tell their sides of the story. I could feel Max's pain at having to reveal a secret that could possibly alienate Quinn forever. I could sympathize with Taylor, who had been there for Max when she needed him most, and then to feel betrayed by her choices. And Quinn...his grief and anger were palpable things. This is a powerful, sensitive, well-written addition to Donna Hill's oeuvre. Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is excellent, a very touching story of love., June 14, 1999
People you have got to read this book! I cried a lot while reading, because the story was just so touching and real. The scene with Quentin in the hospital was my undoing. I could feel the emotions that the characters were feeling and it was almost like I was there with them. Donna Hill is a great writer and this follow up novel is just unbelievable! Oftentimes, an author does a follow up story and the second part is not always as good as the first, but this book had my attention from the very first page to the very last page! I stayed up all night reading it because I could not put it down or stop crying throughout the book! Please people read this book. It will captivate you, move you, and touch your emotions! Thanks to you, Donna Hill, for proving again that you are one of the best authors of today!
