Neighborhood Life, June 24, 2008
This review is from: Pieces of the Hole: Short Stories (English and English Edition) (Paperback)
Tony Lindsay's Pieces of the Hole is a compilation of stories that read like real life. Mr. Lindsay takes you swiftly into the lives of his characters, allowing you to feel them in a few short pages. In many ways, his stories reminded me of the old-school Negro story tellers. On the other hand, his voice is so current and fresh, the stories are very much new-school. What I found particularly refreshing is that he would lead you in a direction, yet land you someplace else. There was also a redemptive quality to the stories that rang of hope, truth and change.
Real Life was one of my favorite stories because it told of the many ways in which people relate romantically and as family. It also touched on how much we take for granted or how much people assume they know about those closest to them. Within the compilation, there were laugh-out-loud moments at the pure absurdities of life. I enjoyed every single story in this short story collection.
I recommend Pieces of the Hole to all readers who enjoy true life short stories. This is the first book by Tony Lindsay I have had the pleasure of reading, however, I plan to read others.
