MARGARET YORKE is justly renowned as the "queen" of domestic crime, and in the short stories of "Pieces of Justice" she proves her prowess. Unfortunately, however, the abundance of middle-class, mature women suffering in loveless and abusive marriage in this collection is apt to depress the reader. It is so sad to read over and over again how desperately vulnerable Yorke's women are. My point is that the monothematic structure of this collection, almost entirely unrelieved by color and humor - wry or sardonic - is a bit of too much overkill. Maybe other readers will also put the book aside without reading at least half of the stories. Although I must say the stories provide a good incentive to pursue a career, open a personal bank account, think twice about marriage!
