About the Author

Veronica Neave is a highly respected Theatre Actor acclaimed nationally and internationally. She has appeared in over fifty stage productions within Australia from Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams to writing and appearing in various shows with Kate Champion's Force Majeure and has worked in a number of TV series as well. Veronica has featured in a number of films and has just completed filming as the lead in an Australian film - Girl Clock. Known for her versatility in the Arts industry she is a performer, writer, teacher and director. Veronica grew up in Australia as an army brat, moving every few years to a new post. Veronica attended drama classes from the age of five which she continued until leaving school. It was a natural progression then to study drama at University. Veronica trained for three years at the University of Southern Queensland as an Actor receiving a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Theatre. She has worked professionally as an Actor in film, television and theatre in Australia ever since. After seven years working as a classical actor she decided to merge her acting with physical acting working with Legs on the Wall and Rock and Roll Circus, travelling the world for several years. Her experiences honed her skills to become more of a specialist performer. Using her training in Yoga, dance and balance acrobatics she became passionate about marrying the techniques of text based theatre and movement. Her wide and varied experience in the arts over the last 21 years has seen her engaged as performer, writer, director, dramaturge and teacher. Growing up Veronica never knew her grandparents; they had all passed away rather prematurely. When Veronica found out she was Breast Cancer gene carrier at the age of 39 she felt a strange connection to her grandmother Elsie who had died from the disease at age fifty. When her Mother and two sisters were identified as gene carriers as well it seemed right to take up arms against this insidious expression of hereditary character. She set about finding out everything she could about this gene mutation that had effected generations of women in her family. What unfolded was a myriad of conundrums and ethical dilemmas reflected against a history of struggle and death. Veronica continues to perform in Theatre in Australia and abroad. Although she has written for theatre for many years this is her first book. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Elizabeth A. Davies on June 15, 2011
Format: Kindle Edition
I read this book last year when I was waiting on my own BRCA test. Although I appreciated the author's perspective, her description of the "massive pain" after mastectomy scared the living daylights out of me. Totally unecessary. I never had anywhere near the pain she describes, never (my mastectomy was a year ago, recon operations afterwards were also not so terrible). I participate in an online discussion forum for women of high risk and only rarely hear of women who have this much trouble.

I thought the book was great and recommend it to anyone facing BRCA gene mutations and/or mastectomy - but don't think for a moment that you are doomed to incredible pain. I am NOT saying the author exaggerates her own experience - I believe she went thru what she describes. But her experience is (I believe) unusual on that note.

What I CAN relate to is the joy she expresses in how well her reconstruction turned out.

And so I recommend this book - but with a caution to women that the descriptions of post-operative pain are not necessarily what you need to anticipate.

Having to make the same decision I found this book most helpful and really related to many of the thoughts and understandings of the book. It has assisted me with my choice and I feel less alone in what I am going through. Thanks Veronica
