grande dame of passion at her best,

this is an incredibly passionate recording, should be listened to at high volume levels on a balmy night with a glass of red wine to better feel your heart beating.

Not the best of Chavela Vargas...,

The first album by Chavela Vargas I bought was "Boleros" and it's one of the best CDs I've ever listened to. This one however, is not of the same standard. Vargas's voice is rougher, not as melodic or sensual. Still, she's one of the great singers of Mexico. If you have no CDs by her, buy "Boleros" first.

Chavela Vargas es una artista. La voz puede ser del gusto o del disgusto del oyente pero, eso sí, en cualquiera de los casos la indiferencia no existe frente a ella.En este disco se contienen algunas versiones definitivas de canciones ya conocidas. Una de ellas es la del título, "Piensa en mí". Aquí Chavela Vargas va desgarrando cada palabra hasta hacerla tremendamente dolorosa; uno puede pensar en el piano de Agustín Lara, una botella que se va quedando vacía y la sordidez del abandono que es irrecuperable. Otra de las canciones es "Acariciame". Creo que nunca había escuchado una súplica más doliente, más desesperada. Esta canción, relativamente moderna, la habían grabado ya otros intérpretes, y la había yo escuchado muchas veces pero nunca había sentido las palabras como en esta versión: Chavela Vargas llega a los extremos con el sentimiento de la pérdida; creo que en esa vena trágica ella realmente se mantiene alejada de cualquier comparación. Además de estas canciones que menciono, todo el disco ofrece grandes sorpresas. Yo recomiendo ampliamente esta grabación que, por si fuera poco, ofrece algo todavía mayor: la honestidad de una voz que no necesita de preciosismos para comunicar, para conmover, para hacernos sentir vulnerables, dolientes... realmente humanos. |
