Burning Rubber On Interstate 77,
This review is from: Pierce My Brain (Audio CD)
For a brief moment in time, northeast Ohio became a hotbed for record labels looking to sign bands during the punk era due to the success of Devo, The Pretenders and The Dead Boys.
The problem was Devo and The Pretenders fled the USA for England, while The Dead Boys became stars in the New York City club scene. Northeast Ohio didn't develop talent as much as having talented groups wanting to take the next step forced to leave the area to get "discovered." But perhaps the best of the "second wave" was the Rubber City Rebels. The band packed enough musical power and quirky lyrics to earn the label of a "punk band," but delivered so much more, especially live. But as many bands learned (yet again) - the music industry is a pretty unforgiving place - and what's hot today is in the cutout bins tomorrow. Though the CD may be viewed by many as hardly essential for the punk-era collection, it shows how one band developed in a region not really known for riding new waves of music and got that one brief shot on the national scene.
