Finding Piano age by maker!
Pierce Piano Atlas give some history of some piano makers and helps you find the age of a piano. It has a alphabetical list of manufacturers with piano serial numbers and year of make. There is a lot information you will find in this atlas. To use this edition you should begin with pages 6 and 7 to get a full appreciation of what is in this edition,(12th), of Pierce Piano...

The Pierce Piano Atlas has been a trusted source for the piano industry and the public for many years now. It is still the best single source when you want to know how old a piano is.
With over 12,000 piano manufacturers represented it is the book to turn to when trying to uncover the date a piano was built. The latest (12th) edition also has lots of interesting tidbits about the piano and the piano industry. Pierce Piano Atlas includes beautiful pictures of old pianos and when they and were made. The book gives descriptions of these pianos, and why they were made and for who. The Atlas also gives small history info of some piano makers. To bad, this Atlas only comes out every 5 years. New pianos come out every year. But, not all is lost. For example Samick Piano Indonesia has a different letter each year. 2005-IJO??, 2006-IJP??, 2007-IJQ??, 2008-IJR??, and 2009-IJS??,... Also it's to bad, this atlas does not give constructive criticism of piano makers. I think if the model numbers were listed before the dates it would easier to follow, as in these examples: these Model number symbols JS, SIG KC, and KIG is for Samick Pianos made in Indonesia, and these Model number symbols SU, SKV, SG, AND SKG is for Samick pianos made in Korea. Included in the Samick's Korean line is the "World and "Millennium" models |
