5.0 out of 5 stars A useful source for scholars and performers., April 20, 2000

This review is from: Pierre Attaingnant, Royal Printer of Music: A Historical Study and Bibliographical Catalogue (Hardcover)
When Heartz' book is grouped with Howard Mayer Brown's bibliography of renaissance instrumental music, Maurice Esses' book on Spanish variations and their musical sources, and Victor Coelho's bibliography of music for lute in Italian manuscripts, there is little else in the way of secondary sources that those seriously interested in renaissance instrumental music could desire. Heartz' book provides both scholars and performers with extremely useful information on the wide range of music published by one of the most important of renaissance music publishers by providing a detailed bibliography, and by putting the music and its publisher in a clear historical context. Whether you need to check an endnote detail, find new repertoire for performance, or search for an aid to more specific research topics, Heartz' bibliography is a perennial help.
