About the Author

Pierre Bonnard was born in 1867 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, outside Paris. He studied law, but had taken painting as his profession by his mid-20s, and had his first gallery exhibit before he was 30. He showed in the Salon des Independants and worked with a group of painters, including Edouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis, who called themselves the Nabis, from the Hebrew for prophet. Influences on his work ranged from Symbolism to Cubism, and in every variation of his style, his longtime muse and eventual wife Marthe appears over and over, ever youthful. His reputation has strengthened considerably since his death in 1947, so much so, as Stanley Meisler writes, "that Bonnard is now widely regarded as one of our century's most complex and masterful painters". --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book makes me want to see a Bonnard "in person"! The publishers did a fabulous job of depicting the dreamy and lush colors of Bonnards paintings. Faintest shades, brush strokes, lines, tiny details -- it's all visible, and everything contributes to the liveliness of the reproductions. It is certainly hard to capture the emotions that a painting exudes in an art book, and I have not often come across such quality prints.

For me, and I am not an expert, Pierre Bonnard was the 20th century's greatest artist, not Picasso because Picasso had no tenderness in his painting. This book is a beautiful collection of Bonnard's work, the color plates are superb and the accompanying text is excellent. I highly recommend it.

I have waited over a year to buy this book. It is still overpriced in my view. Bonnard's art work is not full- page displayed and some of the bio provided is in conflict with what I have read elsewhere; "Bonnard", Sarah Whitfield/John Elderfield, 1998, Harry N Abrahms, Inc., Publishers (very nice displays of full page art work as well as smaller pieces).
But, it was worth buying all the same. Interesting, a re-evaluation of Bonnard's work in a post-modernist context which has been in progress for a number of years now. Lots of art babel. I want more art work displays!!!!
