"Pierrot le Fou" was my first encounter with Godard and the French new wave movement in general. What struck me when I watched it was the bright colours, the playfulness and, most of all, the great melancholic soundtrack! When I left the cinema that evening I was hooked forever! I searched in vain for the music of this fantastic film and kept humming the two tunes Anna Karina sung in the movie ("Jamais je ne t'ai dit que j'aimerai toujours" and "Ma ligne de chance") over and over again. When I finally got the film on video, I even did a tape of the songs recorded off the TV! But finally; here it is on CD and it's a marvelous one as well. The packaing is impressive and informative and of course: the music is wonderful. It's very much "french 60's movie" type of music. It's melancholic and thoughtful, but there's also a couple of funny chanson numbers and a swinging 60's beat tune! This CD is highly recommended. And don't forget to check out Duhamel's other work - there's an album on the same label called "Le Cinema de Antoine Duhamel" which is also highly recommended.

Even though Godard selected the best actors, wrote the
Perfect script, hired a brilliant editor and utilized
mind bending cinematography, without the soundtrack, it
would have failed. Duhamel uses dark crescendos and slices
of symphonic transendence that mixes tone in the film. While
the scene may have no dramatic content, Duhamel will blare
onto the soundtrack with macbre minuets of a thunderous nature.
He is both delicate and strong. BUY IT. There is no risk.

Antoine Duhamel has written one of the outstanding cinema scores in movie history with his music for the surrealistic movie by Jean Luc Godard Pierre Le Fou. The atmosphere and the feelings of the situations in and around the characters is described perfectly and encompasses you completely. He does the same for Godard's best movie Week-End
