Denise Balcavage's first book, Urban Vegan, is a favorite of mine, so when I found out she was releasing a cookbook featuring everything pie, I naturally had to get it. After months of waiting, (I literally ordered it about six months in advance,) it's finally here, and I'm so excited to be the first to review it.

It features classic, fruit, nut, and cream pies, as well as chapters for savory pies, and pie wannabes, like Boston cream pie and whoopie pies.

I also own Vegan Pie in the Sky by Isa Chandra Moskowitz, and this is just as good. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is trying to limit their soy consumption however, as a lot of the recipes use tofu or soy based dairy substitutes. (Also a complaint of Moskowitz's book by other reviewers was the use of nuts for cream-based pies, this book does not rely on nuts.)

There are also lots of beautiful pictures.

I really can't wait for the holiday season when I really get a chance to try this book out.

I was hesitant to buy this book, since I already own Isa Moskowitz's pie book, but this one is really great and different enough to justify adding it to my collection. It includes savory pies, which you don't find in Vegan Pie in the Sky. There are several different crust options for mixing and matching, and a good variety of traditional and not-so-traditional pies. Lots of nice photos too. I'm a big fan of the sweet potato pie right now, since they've been super abundant in my CSA. Made with the nut or cookie crust, it's the easiest pie I've ever made and tastes great.

This cookbook, like Dynise's other two, is one I genuinely love. It's straightforward, so that even difficult recipes are manageable. The step-by-step pictorial guides make the techniques easy to picture. And the pies and tarts we've made so far have been seriously wonderful!

The Urban Vegan cookbook has been my favourite cookbook for ages and now thrilled to get get Pies and Tarts with Heart.

The instructions are very clear, the ingredients easily available even here in South Africa and what a wonderful, tasty collection
of recipes. Even I, as a terrible baker, should be able to get wonderful results.
