I expected a small book when I received it thanks to the reviews. As an artist/sculptor this book was fantastic. It shows my favorite Michelangelo statue in 150 different camera angles and zooms in on detailed areas that you wont see in any other book. It's an excellent study of drapery, composition, and the human form and flesh in marble.I only wish more outstanding sculptures of the world were given this much visual coverage . Artists who want to see true mastery of material will love this as a study reference. It also does give a short history of it's creation and subsequent damage(by a crazed lunatic)and its restoration. The book is entirely in black and white and must be seen to be believed.

Meditating on the pictures helped me to experience one of the most beautiful moments of the history of the Earth. The images stay with me throughout the day. The book was dissapointing only in being too small, about 6 inches by 8 inches.

This book is inspiring. It helps communicate why Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. I am amazed that he sculpted it when he was 24 years old. Wow.

This story will help describe what I think about this book. I went backpacking through Europe in 1990 for 3 months on a budget of about $15 a day. I was so inspired by this book that I almost purchased it, even though it would have reduced the length of my trip by a day, and I would have had to carry it around for 2 months. Instead, I listened to my Walkman and paged through the book for about 45 minutes before leaving. I regretted not purchasing the book for the rest of my trip. In 2009, I returned to Rome with my wife for our first anniversary and went to one of the Vatican Museums specifically to see if this book still existed. It is the only trinket I purchased on our 2 week trip. It cost 15 Euros (about $20).

This is a fabulous book I have had for years. The photographic study of the Pieta has such beautiful details and angles that nearly no one has access to seeing as it is behind bullet proof glass and very distant from the viewing space. If you ever get the chance to get the book, do it. You literally see such fine details in the sculpture-- the veins, the skin, the delicate face of the Madonna from several angles. There are amazing angles and details you won't see or understand the true masterpiece that is the embodiment of Michelangelo's Pieta.

At the end of the book, there is a beautiful tribute to Michelangelo's work on this particular Pieta. I haven't seen it (the book) at the Vatican in years. If you ever get the opportunity to own it and love art, black and white photography and (one of) Michelangelo's finest works, get it.
