Book Description

November 1, 2000

Presbyterian minister John Witherspoon was a key figure, politically and religiously, in the formative years of the United States. In this fresh account of Witherspoon's thought, L. Gordon Tait focuses on Witherspoon's piety--the way Witherspoon believed that the Christian faith should take visible and practical form in ministry, politics, and everyday obedience and devotion. The Piety of John Witherspoon is filled with photographs from Witherspoon's life, and Tait's comprehensive treatment of Witherspoon makes a significant contribution to the understanding of his impact on church, education, and society.

4.0 out of 5 stars Our Spiritual Father, April 23, 2010

This review is from: The Piety of John Witherspoon: Pew, Pulpit and Public Forum (Paperback)
A Scottish pastor is invited to head the college that later will be called Princeton University. His theology is based in traditional Calvinism, but he was touched by the 18th Century Scottish Enlightenment unawares. He was intent on advancing education in the early years of our nation. So many of our early leaders studied with him. As a member of the Continental Congress he was the only clergy to sign the Declaration of Independence. He pushed for the stronger government the Consitutional Convention would envision, so that America could show the rest of the world the way ahead. He did feel that a strong faith would produce strong and dedicated citizens. Is that what we lack today in our confused society?

Although I haven't read this book yet, I plan to get it somehow. I am researching family history and this is one of my descendents. I think this is so cool.
