For anyone interested in pre- and early WWII submarine warfare and life aboard the s-boats of the U S NAVY. Cramped living quarters, out-maneuvering enemy surface ships and on the attack. The heroism within the crews and the anxiety while submerged in the "silent service". Today's submariners would enjoy this history of their earlier shipmates.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
I first read this many, many years ago and still find myself after many re-reads, being drawn to it...it is just that good a book. Extremely well written, factual, and inspiring. The illustrations are very appropriate and blend into the writing in a manner never seen today. It covers the entire scope of USN submarine operations in WWII including the major technical problems of the torpedoes that severely limited the submarine force for the first half of the war. This is not a technical study of US submarines and as it was never intended to be, so it still gets a "five". A must read in order to appreciate the dangers, tribulations, and stark heroism of United States Submariners, and you will not be able to read it just once.

I did expect a little newer book, but it was exactly what my husband wanted. His fell apart a few years ago. Thanks!
