About the Author

Jessica Kinney is a Maine native and mother of five children who lives and writes on the coast of Maine. A Bowdoin College graduate and former middle- and high-school English teacher, Jessica says The Pig Scramble was inspired by a true story about her husband, who grew up as the youngest child on a Maine dairy farm and really did win a pig at a local fair.

I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my granddaughter, and I'm having a very hard time waiting until Christmas to read it to her! It is a beautiful story about a young boy trying to keep up with his older brothers, and shows how the love and advice of extended family can help shape a child's life. Thoroughly enjoyable for children of all ages. I will be looking for future books from this wonderful author.

"The Pig Scramble" is a delightful story both to read to children or to be read by them while enjoying Brannen's charming illustrations. Kinney finds just the right words to evoke a young boy's growing up experience. Whoever catches the piglet in the pig scramble at the fair gets to keep it. Taking advice given by Uncle Leon, Clarence lets the mass of screaming children chase the animal toward him. As the pig "comes to him," he spits on his hands and rubs them in the dirt. The piglet streaks by him, he "muckles" onto its hind legs, and the animal is his. His success surpries and impressses not only him and his uncle, but also his bigger older brothers. Hooray! The Pig Scramble

My 6.5 year old granddaughter had the best review of all. She said: "Wow, I really liked that book!" I have never heard her say that after ANY book I have read to her. We both loved it. This book reinforces some lessons many of us still need to be reminded of, such as looking at things from another person/pig's perspective, and that we all have our strengths no matter where we fall in the sibling hierarchy. The illustrations were fantastic, particularly the one where the pig is looking at the children from his perspective. Excellent work!!! Thank you Aunt Ruth for sending this to us.

This picture book has a lovely old-fashioned feel. It's a cute story and the illustrations are absolutely delightful. With a text longer than a typical picture book today, illustrator Brannen had "space" to play with. The spread from the little pig's point of view as the children waited to start the scramble is priceless.
