PreSchool-Grade 1-- Poor Nina. Once again Aunt Agatha has misunderstood her niece's birthday request. This time, instead of a lovely, furry guinea pig, Nina receives Herman--an enormous porcine specimen of a most odiferous variety. Despite the initial shock, Herman's charm wins Nina's heart, and she sets about making him happy. A family outing, however, reawakens the large pig's longing for his former life, and Nina's love for him leads her to make him really happy. Krause has crafted a delightful tale, perfect for adults to share with children. The story entertains while gently illustrating the meaning of real love and friendship. Young listeners will enjoy Herman's innocent gaffes and his great pink girth. Readers familiar with Krause's illustrations for The Santa Clauses (Dial, 1986) will find the same lively cartoon style and engaging sense of humor. Her well-crafted ink-and-watercolor drawings enliven the text.
