4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect book in a less than perfect format, December 17, 2002
This review is from: Piggies (Board book)
"Piggies" is a classic. Mirthful with beautiful illustrations, this book would be perfect for any youngster under the age of seven. Audrey and Don Wood have collaborated on several award-winning books, and of the ones we've seen, "Piggies" is our favorite.

The story is simple. The child narrator discusses his/her five pairs of piggies (fingers, thumbs), assigning a temperament to each pair. The pairs go through several kinds of environments, changing with the environment. The ten little piggies cavort and act up according to the situation. In the end there is a bedtime coming together of the piggies.

That rather perfunctory summary does no justice to this charming book, especially since the illustrations by Don are spectacular.

And this is the main beef with this board book format of the story (and the sole reason for losing a star.) Several full-size versions of this book exist. At this larger size, the amazing detail of the little pigs emerges. But in the board book format, the illustrations get squeezed down, losing the details that bring out the personalities of the piggies.

This leads to a tough decision: go with the sturdier board book or with the regular hardback. Much depends on how hard your children treat books. Very small children would do better with the board book, while older children would be better off with a larger, less sturdy format.

Still, either way, this is an admirable addition to any young child's library and comes highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An old story with a fun new twist and fantatsic illustration, August 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Piggies (Hardcover)
The story is an old one, but this book is highly original. Don Wood's illustrations add a distinct and engaging personality to each of the ten piggies. My 16 month old son loves the goofy faces and elaborate visuals that show basic ideas: tall, wee, hot, cold, clean, dirty, good. I love the clever character twists on each gorgeous page. The subtle and silly sub-texts allow adults to enjoy the book too!

My son (who is now 11) loved this book when he was a toddler. Now his 2 year old sister adores it too. The illustrations are both beautifull and funny. My daughter loves to play "where's the ..." with the action packed pictures. I toddler must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pigtail wagging cute, June 8, 2006
This review is from: Piggies (Board book)
We have two copies of this book, one we've had for 14 years now and we absolutely love this book! My children wanted this book read every night at bedtime for years, especially since at the end of the story we'd use our little piggies to "skip down their tummies and dance on their toes" just before their kiss goodnight. This short story is just delightful. The illustrations are wonderful and every time we'd read it we'd discover something new like, how the left hand smart piggy always has an item in his hand on one page that he'll use on the next page. Our original book has been taped repeatedly and my 16 yr old who got the book as a birthday gift when he was 2 still doesn't want to get rid of the book! It's like an old teddy bear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for reading with your Mommy and Daddy, December 2, 2002
This review is from: Piggies (Paperback)
I am an 18 month old toddler. My Mommy and Daddy first started reading this book to me when I was only 1 year old. I didn't like it at first. I just wanted to read my book about farm animals. But my Mommy and Daddy seemed to think it was so charming that they kept reading it to me and soon, I started to like it.

What makes it fun for me is that my Mommy and Daddy play along with the book. Each page has a unique hand position or hand play that they can imitate. Towards the end, one of the hand plays involves tickling my tummy, so I look forward to that. Now that my parents know the entire book from memory, they sometimes "read" the book to me without the book by reciting the words along with the hand gestures, and it is still a lot of fun.

The pictures are very bright, colorful, and complicated. For me, the pictures are too complicated to understand, but I hope to understand them one day when I am older, so I am going to hang on to this book for a little while.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Piggies", August 8, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Piggies (Paperback)
Piggies Piggies, written by Audrey and Don Wood, is an exciting, imaginative, and interesting children's book. It is based on a child's view about his/her fingers, better known in this book as "piggies." The illustrator's use of small, decorative pigs on each finger gives a great visual to the reader to capture the child's imagination. Each pig is dressed differently, and each one has a different facial expression. The wonderful and brightly-colored backgrounds of pink, blue, and purple are clearly appropriate for this type of book. In the book, the imagination of the child takes control. The story takes the child on a wild journey in which the child's fingers travel around the world. The child also gives each finger a name such as "long," "fat," and "wee fingers." Piggies is a great book that I recommend for all children. It is easy to read, clear to understand, and lots of fun. If you haven't read this amazing book, what are you waiting for? Read and enjoy the adventurous journey of the "piggies!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Piggies is Perfect, June 11, 2007

When our children were under 5, Piggies was an all time favorite. I must admit that despite reading after reading at bedtime... those Piggies still put a smile on my face. This book is absolutely delightful and funny. Every page has an illustration that is worth taking a few minutes to appreciate the humorous details of those Piggies.

My wife and I now give Piggies as a gift to the parents of younger kids. Our children are now teens and they still laugh about this book. It is truly one of those books for all ages.

The story in Piggies is cute, but the best part of the book is the detailed illustration. Every "piggie" has his or her own personality. One is a "bookworm," always reading even when in the bathtub. One of the "long" piggies is always stretching out, and one of the "fat" piggies is always munching on something. It's fun to see what each character is doing next in the pictures. You can read it over and over again, and always catch something new that's happening. For a mom who has to read the same story over and over again, this is a wonderful relief. I actually enjoy looking at this book every time I have to read it to my 2 year old son. We also act out the story, which amuses him to no end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do You Like Pigs You Will Like This Book!, April 8, 2003
A Kid's Review
In the book Piggies by Audrey Wood and Don Wood there are lots of pigs. The pigs are really funny. They sing, they take baths, they read, they eat watermelon, and get muddy. Something you have to know, though, is that the pigs are on hands. They are really fingers. I liked the book because I thought the pigs were really cute.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very simple rhyme book perfect for parent/child read-alouds., December 9, 2006
Audrey and Don Wood's PIGGIES re-appears for ages 3-7 and here even includes a music cd with seven original songs. Piggies romp from fingers to toes, this time accompanied by the beat of the cd's songs in a very simple rhyme book perfect for parent/child read-alouds.
