PreSchool-Grade 1-A town's residents busily prepare delicacies, anticipating the exciting arrival of the pigs that are "coming to play, hooray!" In fact, a veritable banquet awaits: "We're planning a feast for ten thousand at least,/We're cooking a fabulous meal." The porcine party is followed by high-stepping dancing and, when the frolicking comes to an end, the insatiable guests request one last snack. Though the warm, welcoming hosts are weary and worn-out, and have joined in the fun, they serve up crumb, plum, and rum cakes, and anticipate the arrival of-the sheep. Oller's distinguished watercolors of boisterous, smiling pigs are a perfect match for Newman's winsome, lyrical verse. This rollicking romp will be a storytime delight or a terrific laptime treat. It's sure to bounce right off the shelves.

Playful verses packed with internal rhymes elaborate on the extensive menu and describe the pigs swinging song-and-dance act after the meal. Winsome watercolors in soft colors and rounded shapes create personable pigs whose eloquent facial expressions and body language add to the humor. Like Dogs, Dogs, Dogs (2002) and Cats, Cats, Cats (2001), by the same team, this animal frolic has a fast pace that will work for story times, with enough detail in the illustrations for further scrutiny by young listeners. Lesléa Newman is the author of 64 books for readers of all ages including the middle grade novel, HACHIKO WAITS, the poetry collection, STILL LIFE WITH BUDDY, the short story collection, A LETTER TO HARVEY MILK, and the children's books A SWEET PASSOVER, THE BOY WHO CRIED FABULOUS, THE BEST CAT IN THE WORLD, DONOVAN'S BIG DAY, and HEATHER HAS TWO MOMMIES. Her literary awards include poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. Nine of her books have been Lambda Literary Award finalists. "The pigs are coming to play, hooray!/The pigs are coming today./We'd better take care to completely prepare,/A minute's too long to delay." The entire town is up, out, and busy cooking a marvelous gastronomic spread for their soon to be arriving porcine friends. "We're planning a feast for ten thousand at least,/We're cooking a fabulous meal./We're mixing and baking and fixing and making/A spread that will make those pigs squeal." And after eating all their yummy treats...fried green tomatoes, cheese tortellini, gooey chop suey, pastrami on rye, mashed sweet potatoes, buckets of apple brown betty, mountains of chips with fountains of dips, and coconut chocolate cream pie..., it's the pigs turn to thank their hosts. "They sing and they dance and they swing and they prance,/They light up the stage like the sun./Our hands get to clapping, our feet set to tapping,/And then we all join in the fun." A good time is definitely had by all..... The dynamic duo, author, Leslea Newman and illustrator, Erika Oller are back, and after singing the praises of cats (Cats, Cats, Cats!)and dogs (Dogs, Dogs, Dogs!) in earlier picture books, are now ready to take on pigs. Ms Newman's engaging, rhyming text is filled with rhythm, energy, humor, and fun, and is complemented by Ms Oller's playful watercolors, rich in warm, soft tones and expressive, eye-catching details.
