Pike - Fred Buller,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pike (Hardcover)
Buller's classic work was first read by me around thirty years back, or thereabouts, when I got the copy I still have. It's one I've gone back to many times both for the pleasure of reading its varied sections, and also for reference to have some point or other cleared up.I suppose it's a little out of date nowadays, but so am I - so it fits me well. Reading it is nearly as good as going pike fishing. Find a copy. You won't regret it, although you might baulk a little at the price. So far, I haven't found a copy of "Domesday" to go with "Pike", but I will! I was able to borrow a copy around twenty years ago, but its owner, for some reason, wanted it back again...

"Pike" - some observations,
By Kilrymont (Somewhere in Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pike (Hardcover)
My copy dates from the first (only?) print run in hardback, dated I think around '71. It's a book I go back to regularly, sometimes to check on some misremembered point, or just for the pleasure of re-reading it. I'm also lucky enough to have "Domesday" as well, and together the pair are a core element of my angling bookshelf.Although its tackle section is clearly very dated in terms of what tackle's available nowadays, Buller's fishing wisdoms are timeless, his research vital, his observations as perceptive now as they were then. This book formed the backbone of what drove me to become a pike fisherman - and for that I'm hugely grateful; I've had so much pleasure from this pursuit (sadly not spent in catching overmany big ones) and I recommend without reserve Fred's wonderful book to all who can nowadays afford a copy. Later paperback versions will read just as well as original hardbacks, and won't empty your pocket nearly as much. But the chances are it'll eventually fall to bits from the inevitable re-reads you'll subject it to!! Find one, read it cover to cover, and expect your fishing friends to blag a read of it... Just make sure they bring it back!!

I have been pike fishing for over 40 years and every time I read this outstanding piece of literature I learn something new every time which has lead to me catching many, many,PIKE in double figures. I have met the author who in my opinion is a first class angler any absolute gentleman, always willing to impart his knowledge and experiences of pike fishing to young and old alike improving their understanding of what is one of our finest freshwater fish, teaching fishermen and women to preserve this asset, which was for so many years was abused and misunderstood. This is without doubt one of the finest fishing book which has ever been written and I cherish my copy. |
