Biography

As the flagship artist for producer Irv Gotti's Def Jam-affiliated Murder Inc. label, Ja Rule became one of the rap industry's most commercially successful artists during the early 2000s, working closely with the hitmaking producer and his stable of talent. Born Jeffrey Atkins on February 29, 1976, in Queens, NY, Ja Rule established himself with Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), a hardcore ... Read more in Amazon's Ja Rule Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Ja The Comeback Kid? February 29, 2012
By Q. Pair
Format:Audio CD
Ok, I think it's fair to say that Ja Rule has had a pretty rough career run in the last nine years or so. Anyone who is a fan of Ja and has seen his music and style evolve since Venni Vetti Vecci has to be able to admit that ever since that beef with 50 Cent, his career has never recovered, and neither has his music. Every album pushed out since Pain Is Love [Explicit] has been a cautionary tale of how NOT to do things in the music industry, being mere shadows of Ja's past glory days. More than ten years after the release of what most believe to be his magnum opus, Pain Is Love 2 graces the masses with its presence in Ja Rule's latest attempt at a career resurrection. Surprisingly, this may be the closest he's gotten to it yet.

One thing that Ja Rule is known best for is his infatuation with singing in his songs. I use the term singing loosely of course, but that's what he does. Claiming to have started the trend of singing on hardcore rap songs (with some validity) it is in fact how he managed to grab that mainstream appeal and get all of those J-Lo and Ashanti songs all over the radio. Well, this time around there is none of that. It seems that Ja has taken the hint from all the nasty bloggers over the years and pushed aside the crooning part of him and focused strictly on displaying those lyrical skills that made us love him in the first place. Replacing Ja on the hook are a host of relatively new names like Kenny Dark, Anita Louise, Kalina from Dirty Money, Leah Siegal, who's on three of the thirteen tracks for some reason.

Overall, PIL2 is a solid compilation of Ja's latest work. With the singing on pause, he shows off those lyrical skills on a level not seen since the Venni Vitti Vicci days, which is a welcome change to the stuff he's been putting out over the last several years. On the downside, which isn't really much of a downside, the entire CD comes across as... poppy. Every track feels like an attempt at radio play. That being said, that's not necessarily a bad thing, and I honestly can't find a song I don't like. However, the production and the guest singers all sound like they're reaching for a slot on your local "we play everything, including Nicki Manaj!" station. The result of which is that the music is pretty forgettable and fails to resonate in any way.

So is it PIL2 as good as its predecessor? Definitely not. Is it good enough for Ja to call this a comeback? Maybe. There's enough bangers on here to give your car stereo a work out, and the replay value is mild at best, so you may end up liking it more over time. It's not his best work to date, but it's the best stuff he's delivered in a long time, and definitely worth a listen.

A solid 4/5 Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pil 2 was the outcome and jubilation was the effect. February 28, 2012

Determination 2 succeed results in Pil 2. Like Ja said "Tough times don't last Tough ppl do." Pil 2 has landed in order to fill in that void. Smart artist + Smart producer = Surreal Project. For ppl in doubt, never look back, it distracts from the now. Ja is no longer young. He is in that grown man lane now. For those who still haven't quite grasped the concept that Ja is back just give Pil 2 a listen. The nursery rhymes other rappers spit don't compare. Pil 2 is real Rap/Hip-Hop album. They say to present your findings to the world even if what you find seems impossible to explain... well I found Pil 2. An artist is supposed to get lost with his music but easily find his way out and that is what Ja managed to do with Pil 2.

Cons: Too Short, only 13 tracks.
