Beyond Stretching,
By P A S Christensen (Fairfax VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Pilates Back Book: Heal Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pain with Easy Pilates Stretches (Paperback)
As owner of Orchid Pagoda Pilates in Fairfax VA was very impressed by the integrity of the editorial and ease of use of the exercises.Pilates is NOT stretching only. The key concept of Joe Pilates' work was that all movement is generated from the core. So EVERY exercise builds adbominal strength which is essential for anyone with back issues. Secondly, Pilates builds strength and flexibility simultaneously. Relaxed, flexible muscles are less likely to put stress on the skeletal system. This is the reason I personally found Pilates and after 3 months of doing Pilates 3x per week eliminated my own neck and shoulder pain which simple stretching had not helped. The book is easy to follow and the photos are first rate. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Stretching does cure Back Pain,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Pilates Back Book: Heal Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pain with Easy Pilates Stretches (Paperback)
Back problems can come from a variety of sources. Neck injuries, neck mis-alignments,torn ligaments, improper posture, short leg, and the list goes on. Each back problem, is different than the next, and should be treated differently. There isnt a one-fix all!!! For me, the main cause of my back pain, was do to, tight glutes, and hamstrings. They were so tight, that it tightened up my back muscles(back pain), and virtually every other muscle in my body. The stretching outlined in this book, really helped to lossen up those muscles, and therefore lossen up my back muscles, and therefore help get rid of back pain. You dont need any medical studies, to show this, works. Its pure common sense. The muscles in the body are interconnected, and one set of tight muscles, are prone to tighten other muscles. The book has, helped me alot. Definately worth the buy.

includes positions hurtful for those with back problems,

This review is from: The Pilates Back Book: Heal Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pain with Easy Pilates Stretches (Paperback)
I am very disappointed in this book. I bought it specifically because I wanted to continue with Pilates even with two bulging disks. Unfortunately, this book includes positions that my physical therapist said are most stressful on the spine. He said never to use the "V-shape" position and that very position appears on several pages of this book. The book includes the basic Pilates exercises that probably contributed to my back injuries in the first place. My therapist had recommended a Pilates class taught by physical therapists. I could not take that class and was hoping this book would be along those same lines. It was not.

Great book for back pain sufferers. Simple and effective!,

This review is from: The Pilates Back Book: Heal Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pain with Easy Pilates Stretches (Paperback)
This is a wonderful well illustrated book with easy to perform exercises that are effective for back pain. The descriptions are easy to follow and there is not an overwhelming amount of detail.
Many of the exercises presented are the same ones that I was encouraged to perform as part of my rehabilitation from back surgery. However, the descriptions of the exercises were much better than what I got from my physical therapist. One shortcoming of the book is that although the descriptions of the exercises are good, they can be even clearer. Overall, however, they are adequate and anyone with a back problem will certainly get their money's worth. I also highly recommend "Back Care Basics" by Mary Pullig Schatz. This book presents anatomical detail well, a variety of progressive programs and nicely compliments and augments the material in the Pilates Back Book.

Pilates Basics,
By Tara "Fitness Buff" (San Fran, CA.) - See all my reviews

If you ever taken a mat class you will know these exercises front and back, if you haven't then this very basic book will show you how to do the moves without hurting yourself for the most part. The straight leg positions are not the most comfortable position to be in when your low back hurts you. I like the floor movements on your back.

Great entry-level text for cranky backs,

I had purchased Ungaro's Body in Motion and Siler's Pilates Body to begin doing pilates, as they were generally the most respected texts. But my back couldn't handle the most basic level of some of the introductory exercises. This book, however, along with King and Green's Back Strengthening Workout, has given me a sequence of exercises and modifications that (I can already feel after two weeks of use) will get me where I want to be. The introduction to this book is a little too technical on anatomical detail, and the Ungaro and Siler books are superior in terms of illustration and textual guidance at the advanced levels, but without this I'd be quitting and/or hurting before I ever got going with Pilates.

I gained alot of weight during my pregnancy, and being a small person, the extra weight hurt my back long after my son was born. Through Pilates and specifically, this book I have relieved much of my pain. The exercises are effective and don't hurt to perform. The photography is excellent and the direction given to each move is great. A wonderful, helpful book.
