From a real reviewer!!!,
By
This review is from: Pilates for Wimps: Total Fitness for the Partially Motivated (For WimpsT Series) (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from my local library. I love it so much I have signed on to Amazon to order it for myself. Regardless of what the last reviewer thinks (how bored is that person anyway?)I have honestly read this book and found it simple, straight forward, and easy to follow. I tried several other books and videos and this was the clearest and least intimidating. People looking for an introduction to Pilates, this is definately the right book for you!!!

This is one of the best books I've read on Pilates or home exercise of any kind. It is intelligently written, with a sense of humor as well - giving the reader a good sense of the seriousness with which the author approaches her subject, and also the fun she imbues into exercise! The steps are clear and designed to provide the maximum effect, and protection against strain or injury. The results are wonderful - a sense, especially for us middle-age folks, of strenthening in the places that really become fragile over time - very quickly you feel you can do so many more things with confidence, rather than tentativeness. And when you get through the basics, there are some really challenging and interesting exercises at the end that the author herself demonstrates. This book will take you far.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! As a physical therapist I try and incorporate Pilates in my treatment sessions to strengthen and stretch my patients. This is an easy to follow book that I can recommend to my patients so they can exercise at home in a safe an effective way. A great book for any level of fitness!!

Easy, Fun and Comprehensive Introduction to Pilates,
By
This review is from: Pilates for Wimps: Total Fitness for the Partially Motivated (For WimpsT Series) (Paperback)
I had been hearing about the benefits of Pilates for some time now and decided to give it a try. This book provides a clear, visually compelling introduction to Pilates that explains the purpose of each stretch and exercise as well as showing easy-to-follow images as a guide. It is also substantial enough to establish a variety of effective workout routines that can be built upon over weeks and months. I felt improvements in my posture and back strength after my first week. I am writing this review because I am back at Amazon ordering a copy as a gift for a friend of mine.

Pilates for Wimps,

It may not be a cure-all for combating the 27 course Thanksgiving meal - but a Pilates exercise program as explained by this book does provide a strong basis for health and fitness. I liked the direct and easy to follow writing style. The careful descriptions and full color pictures ensure an easy understanding. The book won't replace a personal trainer, but it will help ensure that by the time you hit the gym, you clearly know what you are doing. Actually, this strikes me as a great book for personal trainers themselves, to enhance their understanding of this growing fitness regimen.

I loved the pictures and the very simple style of this book. It is so easy to follow. For so long I was so intimidated by the Pilates method out of my own ignorance. But this book makes it all so accessible, there is nothing to be afraid of!I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever even thought of starting Pilates!!!

It Finally Makes Sense,

This review is from: Pilates for Wimps: Total Fitness for the Partially Motivated (For WimpsT Series) (Paperback)
I have been struggling to teach myself pilates for almost 3 months now, using another product. I guess the best way would be to go and take a class or a private lesson. But I always feel totally dorky in class settings and don't really feel like private lessons are something that's affordable for me. I really liked the layout of this book and it seemed really clear. I like that this book has different exercises for people at different levels, so that as I start to get the hang of things I can move to the advanced section. I guess I must be a wimp, because this book really speaks to me and really to all people at my level of beginner.

Real men DO do Pilates,
By Olaf Perlmutter (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pilates for Wimps: Total Fitness for the Partially Motivated (For WimpsT Series) (Paperback)
Approaching forty and watching my waistline expand and feeling my flexibility and durability start to go -- what's an active man to do?A while ago, I read an article about how Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets had started doing Pilates on the advice of his wife, and how he had turned most of his teammates into Pilates addicts. I figured if it's good enough for professional athletes, it's good enough for me. I went on the internet, found a few basic exercises, and incorporated in to my routine. I began to feel the benefits in just a few weeks. Recently, I decided that I wanted to expand my Pilates workout and spend a couple days a week strictly doing Pilates, so it was time to invest in a book. I looked around at crowd of Pilates books available, and this one REALLY STOOD OUT. I was familiar with the "For Wimps" series (I have the Yoga version, too), and this book was yet another stellar entry in the series: Big, defined pictures; real people; a couple of super-helpful anatomical diagrams; beginner and advanced techiniques; and a clear, well-written narrative made Pilates for Wimps the obvious choice. In fact, I was shocked to learn how inefficiently I had been doing things before I got this book. I even bought a couple as gifts for my corporate basketball league teammates. Longer, stronger; leaner, meaner--that's me. If you're looking to break into this great fitness method, or are interested in enhancing your existing knowledge about Pilates, I highly recommend going with Pilates for Wimps. It's heads, shoulders--and firm, toned abs--above the rest of the field. |
