I saw Eliza back in 1989 at the Arvada Center opening for David Wilcox. I became a fan instantly. That night she played a number of cuts from this album on stage by herself along with even more from the hard to find "Songs of Rainmaker" CD. She is a very talented singer-songwriter. On this CD there is not a weak song in the lot. My only complaint is that the CD is realatively short, otherwise this would be a five star performance. Go see her perform she is magical.

This CD is deep, and Eliza's interpretations have left my head spinning for years now. But the music itself, the cryptic & multi-layered lyrics, the incredible voice, all lead to this being a first rate CD that I know you will want to hear over & over. Texas at its best. One of the things I love about Eliza's music is the storytelling. She is raw and tender, angry and spiritual, sensuous and androgynous all at once. Don't miss this unparalleled CD.

Smooth, Power House Folk,

This was the album that introduced me to Eliza Gilkyson, and though I love all her work, this album will always be that special one to me. It's a folk album, but it's a smooth-listening one. More 'singer/songwriter' than folk because the sound is so modern. Her voice is pretty and watery -- becoming husky every now and then. The lyrics range from love to the environment -- all the things you'd expect from modern folk. But it's the way she sings and creates the musical arrangements that really makes them special. Shadows and Footsteps is likely to be your favorite song on the record, initially. This is one of those albums whose first song is sort of a nice, sweet one to get you started but it's the second song that holds all the power. It's a powerhouse vocal number that drips with expression. Then immediately, the album moves to something more up-tempo to lighten the tone. But the intensity lives on. Eliza Gilkyson is an artist to 'meet' - musically speaking. And this album is a good place to meet her, if folk is your favorite. (If you prefer something less folky, try HARD TIMES IN BABYLON first. It's just as good.)

Calling All Angels is a song that will be an 'Earworm' for many of her fans. People who like gentle music will 'absolutely' enjoy it!
