I bought the book and I am just returning from the Camino from Porto to Santiago. The book is very good and shows all the ways and things to do. I bought the 2004 edition which is outdated on some restaurants and hotels, but I just bought the 2009 edition and everything has been updated. I recommend the book to everyone who goes to the Camino (this is my third time, first in Portugal) because it has all the "to do" things you really have to do. My only reservation is that the book is written to pilgrims that make the camino with a budget. There are some good hotels and restaurants on the cities noted by the book, but I would include some more for the pilgrims that are rich.

I recently walked the Camino Frances and used Bierley's guide. It was my "Bible" along that month-long route. Next, I'm walking the Portuguese route, so it only seemed common sense to buy his guide for that route! It looks to have the same helpful tips, where albergues are, restaurants, hotels, etc. I literally planned every day from his guide on my last Camino. This guide is also brand new and updated! I would highly recommend his guides!

In the medieval period people from all over Europe, unable to go to the Holy Land because of the war-like conditions during the Crusades, went instead on the Way of St. James [El camino de Santiago], the Great Pilgrimage of the Middle Ages. This book details the route from Lisbon, Portugal to Santiago de Campostela in the province of Galicia, Spain. With only a short detour, one can also visit the Marian Shrine of Fátima.

I just returned and was very pleased with the book, however the camino Portugues is not for the folks that want to do some soul searching. The author calls this a "Practical and Mystical manual" sure the book is, but this camino is hard, it covers a lot of asphalt, and even more cobble stone. Much more than other camino's, and of course that brings with it cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other two-weelers. There is noting mystical about being run over by a car so this camino will require you to PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD. Next to that we need to remember that 95% of the cars in Portugal are diesels with their black fumes. So no wondering of with you thoughts and sour feet from the cobble stones at the end of the day.

I am so pleased with the guide book of the Camino Portugese written by John Brierley.I had his guide book of the Camino Frances when I did the trip in 2010 and it was just great. It has it all, everything you need to know and when I came home I read it all over again. I am planning the Camino Portugese in a year or two and I sure will use my new guiding book, no doubt about that. It has it all just as the other one I have. Runa in Iceland |
