Editorial Reviews

Wishful thinking shapes pilgrims' accounts gathered by Ms. Chareyron in her lively new book.

(Nina Ayoub Chronicle of Higher Education)

Her book brings the reader into vivid, intimate contact with the pilgrims' thoughts and emotions.

(Martin O'Kane Scripture Bulletin)

Nicole Charyeron has produced a well-written and engaging study of a corpus of fascinating and under-studied travel accounts of pilgrims from all over Catholic Europe from the fourteenth to the early sixteenth century. She does a wonderful job of bringing these texts to life and weaving them together into a coherent narrative while respecting their individual voices.

(John Tolan, Université de Nantes and author of Saracens: Islam in the Medieval European Imagination)

This is a very readable book for an academic publication. Chareyron arranges her chapters by stage of pilgrimage towards (and beyond) Jerusalem, synthesizing a commendable range of late medieval pilgrimage narratives. While there is some degree of critical analysis, Chareyron's true achievement to my mind is in summation and comparison of such a wide range of hard-to-access primary sources.
