Great,
This review is from: A Pilgrim's Journey, Volume One: 1986-1995 (Paperback)
This book is a series of magazine articles that chronicle one man's journey through the world of historical reenacting of the late 18th century (AKA Daniel Boone). The author strives to be extremely historically accurate and much of the articles are about ways to achieve a high level of accuracy. There is a great deal of discussion about appropriate gear and a wealth of historical references that are drawn upon. The articles are well written though not great but they are very informative and personal. There are also tons of pictures and diagrams. These essays are valuable for anyone seeking a lighter, simpler, more primitive wilderness experience. The author was backpacking light long before it became popular. While you may not want to head into the winter woods with only a wool blanket and a wool coat for warmth, the author has and lived to write about his experiences and it really gives you a different perspective on how the woods can be experienced.

Excellent read. Mr. Baker is a must for any experiential archaeologist. Not only does he provide references for his research, but he shows the living historian that it is allright to be humble and wish to better one's understanding of the 18thc. Like Mr. Baker, we should never settle for good enough and enjoy learning and discovering new truths about the era we love. I highly recommend!

I recently purchased this after I had borrowed one from a friend to read and decided I had to have it. It is filled with great information and stories. If you are a muzzle loader enthusiast or re-enactor you will find this book to be invaluable. Mark writes well and it is an easy read.

A Pilgram's Journey is an excellent book for those interested in the early period (and later period) Long Hunters and Mountain Men. The book highlights the author's recreation of his journey into reenacting and experiential archaelogy. There are lots of how-tos and instructions. There are excellent ideas for techniques and sources too. The author's research is top notch. He attempts to piece together information from primary and secondary sources. The book is a collection of articles about some of the author's experiences that were published in a magazine and now gathered into a book. I highly recommend this book if this period is interesting to you OR if you plan on doing some reenacting. It is a must have.
