Life on the Mayflower was harsh. When the Pilgrims reached America, things got even worse. More than half the Pilgrims died the first winter. Luckily, the Pilgrims made friends with the Indians who lived nearby. Thanks to the Indians, the Pilgrims set up the first successful American colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Lucille Recht Penner was born in New York City and is an alumna of Barnard College. She has written more than twenty books for children on subjects ranging from dinosaurs to Native American food. Her other books in the MATH MATTERS® series include "Where's That Bone?" and "Lights Out!" Mrs. Penner lives in Tucson, Arizona.
