Product Description

Pilgrim's Progress is a great work of Christian literature. Originally composed in the 17th century, this spiritual allegory has entertained and delighted innumerous readers for over 300 years. Part I tells of "Christian" and his journey to "Celestial City;" Part II tells of the journey of Christian's wife Christiana and their children to Celestial City. The two parts work together as a unified whole, which describes and depicts the believer's life and struggles. Indeed, given the easy style of the book, readers of all ages can understand the spiritual significance of the depictions in the story. However, Pilgrim's Progress does not simply instruct readers with spiritual allegories; it entertains them as well, through Bunyan's creative story telling. Enjoyable and spiritually instructive, Pilgrim's Progress is highly recommended.

This review is from: Pilgrim's Progress - Enhanced Version (Kindle Edition)
Text is well laid out, but not better than the Complete Works of John Bunyan version which can be bought for a few cents less--and you get all his works.

The sample doesn't allow linking to the scriptures. So, I bought this because there were clear links to each scripture reference, and I thought it would be great to see what passages Bunyan was referencing. However, those links are poorly done.

First, the links are to an external site--not to biblical verses inserted in the text itself like notes. So, if you have the Kindle wifi version, you won't be able to access them unless you have wifi available. Also, there's a wait to access the external site and load the page. So, it's not at all like clicking on a note and being able to read it right away.

Second, the links are to a page which has the chapter the verse is in. If you don't remember the verse number, you have to go back to the original text, get the verse number and find it in the page of text. Also, if the verse is in the later part of the chapter, you have to page down to it. Very clumsy.

Third, the text on the external page is readable (for me), but small since it shows a site page in which the biblical text is only part of the image. So, if you have any trouble reading smaller print, you will have to go through the extra step of enlarging the page. Again, very clumsy.

Finally, and less importantly, the link is to the ASV version, though there are other versions in the list, but I couldn't figure out how to access them. It would have been really nice to link the the Geneva Bible which Bunyan actually used.

For me, this version is too clumsy to be truly usable.

A better idea is to get one of the Kindle verse searchable Bibles like the Kindle Bible (KJV) (best navigation with Direct Verse Jump; paragraphed) or the Kindle Bible (WEB) (with Direct Verse Jump) and then just click back and forth between the two books. No internet connection necessary; it goes directly to the verse(s) cited at your pre-selected font size; no extraneous web page material to deal with.
