Book Description

Pilgrim's Progress is an allegory of a Christian's journey (here represented by a character called 'Christian') from the "City of Destruction" to the "Celestial City". Along the way he visits such locations as the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair, the Doubting Castle, and the Valley of the Shadow of Death.

Bunyan, the author, had very little formal education and a humble background. Nonetheless Pilgrim's Progress is considered one of the masterpieces of English literature, and is required reading for Christians who are on the spritual path in a world of temptations. --J.B. Hare

4.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Story, but a Slooow Read September 20, 2012
By Steve
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I missed this book all through my younger years. I had a vague idea what it was about, but never got around to reading it. I was reminded of it while reading another recent purchase, an 'Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin'. Like many people, he is one of my very favorite founding fathers. In his autobiography, he specifically emphasizes the impact that the 'Pilgim's Progress' had on him personally. That was enough for me to give it a try. I'm now convinced that God planned [all along] to SMITE me with this story as I've entered my senior years, knowing full well that it probably would have been totally lost on me in my youth! It's message is truly timeless, and the [honest] reader can't help but identify with MANY of the 'characters' presented. I dare say, that in the various stages of my own life I could identify with practically the entire cast of this story, and still envy good Christian. That said, in all honesty, it was a slooow read for me (as for others) in that it was written in a much older english than is comfortable for today's reader; much like reading a King James version of the Holy Bible, as opposed to a more contempory english translation. For that reason alone, it comes up one star short for me. If you want to view the 'Pilgrim's Progess' as Mr. Franklin did, I'd keep a good old dictionary at hand (I did). My personal recommendation would be to try this great classic in a modern [english] translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last I've read it. July 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's taken me fifty years. It's just the book for people who cant, for one reason or another, read the scriptures. Covers Christianity in a very easily readable manner. I've heard it referred to from the pulpit and many other sources over the years, but just never got around to it till recently. How glad I am.

3.0 out of 5 stars Formatting good, but no TOC December 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was looking for a good version of the unabridged Pilgrim's Progress that contains both parts 1 and 2. This version is formatted well, but one major problem: no table of contents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why did I wait so long? October 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Every Christian needs to read this book; and more than once. There are too many priceless truths and lessons to be learned in one reading.

Best book second to the bible itself for conviction and encouragement on anyone's journey thru life!! Wrote in an uncommon dream setting brings the element of divinity to the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Tedious Classic June 17, 2013
By Mr. AJ
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
No one reads this great classic any more and perhaps they never did read it in its entirety/ It is worth the read
if you wish to understand 18-19th century Christian thought.

3.0 out of 5 stars overrated. May 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was hoping for something that would help me grow my faith, but the old language and spelling is distracting.
