Book Description

Luath Guides June 1, 2000
A funny and affectionate portrayal of the author's home town. Combining tourist information with history, humor, and anecdote, this is a book that will appeal to golfer and non-golfer, local and visitor, alike. It features a detailed map of the course and low down from a regular St. Andrews player. The book also contains an informative guide to the attractions of the town, the best places to stay and eat. It will even persuade the most jaded golf widow or widower that the town is worth a visit.

Review

'A must have' -- Bunkered

'An extraordinary book' -- The Observer

'Tobert displays genuine erudition on ...the history ... and, of course, the tricky business of playing the Old Course itself.' -- The Scotsman

Written in a light, humorous, tongue-in-cheek anecdotal style -- Scots Magazine, Oct 2000

From the Author

A travel book about St Andrews. A book that combines the game I love and the course I have played for 20 years with the town that I consider as close to paradise as I am likely to find this side of the pearly gates.

4.0 out of 5 stars St.Andrews answer to Bill Bryson !, August 21, 2000
This review is from: Pilgrims in the Rough: St Andrews beyond the 19th hole (Paperback)
It has always surprised me that given its long ancient history. It has taken this long for somebody to take up the challenge and write a witty, informative and highly readable book about St. Andrews - its not just about golf! Tobert has filled the role wonderfuly and will hopefuly entice the tourist or 'New Pilgrim' to visit the town's other jewels. Yes there is life off the links, but beware its traffic wardens are infamous and resistence is futile! Congratulations to Tobert for accepting the challenge and at last St. Andrews has a local answer to Bill Bryson and James Dodson.
