Underrated Wu Member Drops A Gem,
By madrox187 "DrewH" (Derby, VT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pillage (Audio CD)
Recently, there has been discrepencies about who is really in or out of the true Wu-Tang Clan. Cappadonna has basically become the guest of honor, the 10th Chamber. The Pillage is Cappadonna a.k.a Cappachino's debut solo album, and it is definetely a Wu Banga. He proves that his raps can not only improve Wu-Tang Clan (especially over U-God), but that he can certainly hold his own in the rap game.
The album begins with a great sample, which leads into the first track, Slang Editorial. As usual, Cap opens with a line ("I came to a fork in the road, and went straight.) that leaves you scratching your head, and thinking how cool it was. It sets the stage for a wonderfully produced and organized album. "Pillage" is a strong second track, but its heat is taken away a bit from being sandwiched in between two of the best tracks on the album. "Run," another fantastic track, desribes criminal life on the streets, and escaping from 5-0's. Next, Cappadonna totally owns "Blood on Blood War," my personal favorite. His flow and lyrics are absoultely on point with the beat. The next two tracks are rather weak. U-God truly cramps the style of Cap and Meth on "Supa Ninjas." "Oh-Donna" features Ghostface, and is another classic Wu track, although Cappadonna's singing of "Oh-Donna" can wear on you. Another one of my favorites, "Milk This Cow" features Method Man on the hook, and Cappdonna's lyrics leave you motivated, and is a feel-good track. "South of the Border" is good, and "Check For a N****" is only average. The album's energy picks back up with "Dart Throwing." Raekwon blesses the track with his gambino flow, and owns the track. Method Man drops a solid verse, as does Cappadonna, who preaches "I opened up my Rap Bible, then the light came over the children." The Pillage closes with a series of slightly above average tracks, many of which feature Tekitha, whos beautiful, R&B voice doesn't exactly work with Cap's raspy, nasal flow. Overall, this is one of the best Wu solos released. The guest appearances are all superb, except perhaps U-God's. True Master is exactly that when it comes to the production on (most) of this album. His beats allow Cappadonna to flow how he should. This is a must-have for any fan of Wu-Tang Clan/East Coast Rap.

Capachino on Ice,
By
This review is from: Pillage (Audio CD)
Cappa, one of Wu-Tang's strong members who many weren't sure if he was a full fledged member or not. Cappa was first on notice on Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... album on "Ice Cream" and he ran with that. His hook on "Winter Warz" was the ice-breaker and it was obvious that he would fly solo on wax. The album was reasonable good, may be better with cuts like "Run", "Blood On Blood War" , "Milk The Cow" and "Everything Is Everything" and the production work is superb with RZA along with True Master and Goldfinghaz. This album unfortuntely didn't have that Cappachino flow like we saw on previous Wu-Tang albums, but it's worth listening to.

Cappadonna - The Pillage,

Cappadonna IS on point on this album in all aspects. Its just I dont really think its classic 5 star material. But I give it about a 4.5 EASILY. Cappadonna's flow and rhymes are on point every line and verse on each track he speaks on. Good appearences also by the Wu-Tang Clan! The production, is pretty grimey in most spots, only a COUPLE tracks where I thought the beats were decent and not THAT great. But I was feeling all of them despite that. If you've heard Cappadonna's sh** from Wu-Tang joints and liked it, this album is definately for you. All of Cappa's good sh** in THIS album. Check it out.

I loved this album when it dropped and I still do. "The Pillage" packs more punch than the average late-'90s hip-hop record, it's a standard of past Wu classics.

The pillage,

Since his introduction into the rap game on Raekwon's debut solo album, Cappadonna has been an honorary member of the Wu-Tang Clan, shining on almost every Clan collaboration thereafter. With the Wu in such high demand, it was only a matter of time before fans started anticipating Cappadonna's solo joint. The pillage presents Cappadonna as a lyrical mastermind in his own right. His style is very similar to both Raekwon and Ghostface, and with RZA handling the production, the album stands up favorably alongside other wu albums. Throughout the album the Don, formerly known as Cappachino, delivers witty, hip-hop tunes that convey a strong message.
The production is tight all the way through, and the general album a strong coherent feel, it sounds and plays just like a good Wu album should. On first listen the album doesn t jump out at the listener as anything special, but like the best Wu albums, give this joint a couple more rotations, and everything starts sounding like it s a gift from the music gods. Sure Cappa isn t perfect, his a good rapper, but sometimes he can seem lazy, or his nasaly voice can be off putting. This is only on a couple of tracks though, on the whole Cappa gives as good as his potential had shown. This is a strong debut album form Cappadonna. Unfortunately for him though, this album is going to be compared more with Wu mid 90 s solo classics like Liquid Swords and Cuban Linx, rather than the majority of hip hop that came out around the same time (i.e. No Limit and Bad Boy!!). This album stands well above the influx of No Limit and Bad Boy records that hit the market at the same time. And on that comparison, one would wonder why this album never quite gets much praise. But this album simply gets shadowed by Raekwons, Ghostfaces, Meths and Gza albums. To be fair this album isn t quite up to that standard, but its a classic none of the less.

Classic Debut,
By

The honorary 10th man on the Wu delivers a soild album classic for his debut. He was the 6th to put out a solo and this I believe went at least gold on the charts. It is his best album of his 3 as well. It's a solid album from the dart spittin' specialist, Don Don Cappachino the Donnamite, from the beginning to the end. Has some very good production as well, done by True Mster (6 songs), RZA (5 songs), Goldfingaz (3 songs) and Mathematics and 4th Disciple each do 1 song. It has 2 classics and 4 near classics, 3 ok tracks and the rest are all good, none worth skipping though. Features a few Wu-Tang mates and some affiliates of the Wu as well. A must have album.
